His Royal Majesty Agaba’Idu Elaigwu Odogbo John, the Paramount Ruler of the Idoma Nation and Chairman of the Idoma Area Traditional Council, has urged Idoma sons and daughters to embrace 2026 as a year of purposeful hope anchored on unity, economic self-reliance, cultural pride and disciplined citizenship.

Idoma 2026 agenda priorities and programmes

Delivering his New Year broadcast on Thursday under the theme “Keep Hope Alive,” the Och’Idoma thanked God for preservation through 2025 and described the coming year as a defining moment that requires responsibility rather than complacency. He paid tribute to traditional institutions, first class chiefs and local leaders for their quiet service in maintaining peace and order.

Reflecting on the past year’s challenges in parts of Idoma land, the monarch emphasised resilience, lawful vigilance and cooperation as the way forward. He reaffirmed the sanctity of life, saying the life of every Idoma son and daughter is precious and must be defended with lawful courage and collective vigilance. “Peace is not a gift dropped into a community; peace is built,” he said.

To strengthen community responsibility for safety, the monarch directed that every ward and clan within the Idoma Kingdom activate a Community Peace and Security Committee under the guidance of the traditional institution, working strictly within the law and in cooperation with recognised security agencies. He also announced the establishment of an Idoma Peace Desk at the Palace to receive verified reports, support mediation and interface with authorities for timely intervention.

Unity and reconciliation were central to the address. The monarch recalled dialogue platforms held during the year, including the Idoma National Peace and Unity Symposium in Otukpo and a royal banquet in Abuja, where elders, youths and professionals engaged in sober reflection. He urged families, kindreds and associations to resolve disputes early and allow dialogue to guide relationships.

Culture, education and economic self-reliance

Culture occupied a prominent place in the broadcast. The monarch recalled the First Idoma Cultural Reawakening Festival held on 23 December 2025 and, by royal proclamation, declared 23 December of each year as Idoma Festival Day, with activities to commence on 21 December and culminate at Och’Idoma Square. He also announced the constitution of an Idoma Festival Planning Council, the development of a Culture and Heritage Register and the launch of an Idoma Language Revival Programme through community classes, schools and radio content.

On development priorities the Och’Idoma unveiled an Idoma Education and Mentorship Initiative to identify talented students, provide structured mentorship and mobilise scholarships. He also announced an Idoma Skills and Enterprise Initiative focusing on agriculture, agro-processing, building trades, fashion, creative industries, digital skills and small-scale manufacturing, stressing that youth must have skills that can feed families and build communities.

The monarch called for economic self-reliance, urging internal solidarity: “Let Idoma people buy from Idoma businesses. Let us strengthen cooperatives and invest in value chains that keep wealth within our land.” He disclosed plans for an Idoma Development and Investment Roundtable in the first quarter of 2026 to prioritise bankable community projects and attract credible partners.

Addressing public conduct, the Och’Idoma warned against normalising dishonesty and appealed for restraint on social media, urging citizens to be gatekeepers of the community’s honour. He also announced a Diaspora Engagement Framework to connect Idoma people abroad with education, investment, healthcare outreach and cultural promotion.

Marking 103 years since the establishment of the Idoma Native Authority in 1923, the monarch tasked Ochetoha K’Idoma with preparations for a befitting remembrance that will advance education, youth development and documentation. He concluded by calling on all Idoma sons and daughters to renew their commitment to peace, unity, hard work, enterprise and respect for constituted authority, praying that peace, unity and prosperity will take firm root in 2026.

Key Takeaways:

  • Och’Idoma urges Idoma people to make 2026 a year of unity, economic self-reliance and disciplined citizenship.
  • Community Peace and Security Committees and an Idoma Peace Desk will support lawful vigilance and rapid mediation.
  • Culture and education initiatives include an annual Idoma Festival Day, language revival and an education and mentorship programme.
  • Plans announced to boost local enterprise, a skills initiative and a development roundtable to attract investment.
