Barra Mansa has stepped up investment in its public health network during 2025, delivering refurbished facilities and opening new primary care units that aim to broaden access and improve service quality for residents.

Barra Mansa health investments bring new clinics and specialised care

Two major openings this year put primary care closer to neighbourhoods that previously had to travel for basic services. The Policlínica do Nove de Abril underwent a comprehensive renovation that upgraded its infrastructure and expanded capacity for the eastern region of the city. In Roberto Silveira, the new Unidade de Saúde da Família Sra. Aida Alves Pimentel opened with a vaccination room, a dressing and procedures room, clinical and gynaecological consultation suites, reception and accessible sanitary facilities. The unit ends the need for many residents to travel to Ano Bom for routine primary care.

Municipal health secretary Sérgio Gomes said the works reflect the administration’s focus on bringing services closer to people. “Each completed project represents a concrete improvement in the quality of care and in the proximity of services to residents. Our objective is to care for people with structure, efficiency and respect,” he said.

Beyond primary care, Barra Mansa is advancing specialised services. The Hospital do Olho, located in Ano Bom, is 85% complete and is expected to become a regional ophthalmology reference. The facility is projected to perform around 300 cataract surgeries per month and handle other eye procedures such as pterygium removal, relieving pressure on regional hospitals and shortening waiting times for patients.

Animal health is also a municipal priority. The new Hospital Veterinário Municipal in Santa Rosa has reached 58% completion. With 900 square metres of built area adjacent to the existing municipal veterinary clinic, the hospital will include specialised consultation rooms, a laboratory, pharmacy, surgical centre, inpatient wards, separate areas for dogs and cats, and an isolation room for infectious diseases. The facility will provide urgent and emergency care for animals and bolster the municipality’s animal welfare and control efforts.

Construction continues on several other community health projects. The Clínica da Família do Boa Sorte is 53% complete; the 350 m² unit will offer general practice, gynaecology, dentistry, vaccinations, prenatal care and diagnostic services. A new clinic in Cotiara is at an early stage with 12% of work executed and will replace the current local PSF, positioning primary care close to the church and residents’ association. Ongoing refurbishments include USF Sirene da Vila Nova (81%), the São Judas health post (80%), the Subsecretaria de Saúde (70%), USF Vila Maria II (35%) and an administrative annex to the Hospital da Mulher (60%).

Looking ahead, the municipality has scheduled further investments for 2026. The UBS Colônia is set for a tender process to expand the unit and incorporate a Centre of Specialities alongside strengthened primary care services. Mayor Luiz Furlani said this long-term planning ensures continuity of improvements. “We are looking to the future with planning and responsibility, to ensure Barra Mansa continues to advance and provide an increasingly structured and efficient health network for everyone,” he said.

Taken together, the 2025 works and projects under way position Barra Mansa to reduce travel times for patients, expand surgical and specialised care, and offer comprehensive services for both people and animals. The combined focus on infrastructure, service mix and strategic planning aims to deliver sustainable improvements in municipal health provision.

Key Takeaways:

  • Barra Mansa health investments deliver renovated clinics and new units to improve access and quality of care.
  • Hospital do Olho nears completion at 85% and will offer up to 300 cataract surgeries per month.
  • Municipal veterinary hospital and multiple Family Clinics are under construction, strengthening both human and animal health services.
  • Planned 2026 projects include an expanded UBS Colônia with a Centre of Specialities to sustain long-term services.
