Belarus braces for severe cold with heavy snow and strong winds

Belarus will see a continuation of wintry conditions next week as forecasters predict persistent snow, significant frosts and gusty winds across the country. The most severe impacts are expected mid-week and into the weekend, with the north‑east likely to experience the deepest snow and the lowest temperatures.

Belarus weather forecast and outlook

The week opens with relatively light cloud and occasional clear spells on Monday and Tuesday, but brief, light snow is possible. Road users should prepare for icy patches during the cold nights and reduced grip on untreated surfaces.

Night-time temperatures at the start of the week will generally range between −6°C and −17°C, with the coldest readings in the north‑east. Daytime temperatures are expected to rise slightly but remain well below freezing, typically between −3°C and −8°C.

Conditions take a turn on Wednesday, 7 January, when forecasters expect unsettled weather to spread across much of the country. Intermittent heavy snow is likely, bringing a risk of snowdrifts and hazardous driving conditions. In addition to snowfall, gusty winds may create drifting snow on exposed roads and worsen visibility.

Drivers should be especially cautious on Wednesday as roads may become covered in compacted snow and ice. Authorities advise planning journeys with extra time, keeping to main routes where possible and carrying winter safety equipment. Visibility could fall to between 1 and 3 kilometres in heavy snow and blowing snow conditions.

Through Thursday and Friday the wintry pattern continues, with snow showers expected in most regions. Light fog, freezing rain risks and further gusts of wind will add to the hazards. Night-time temperatures will strengthen to around −15°C in some areas, while daytime values on Thursday will fall to about −8°C. By Friday, even daytime temperatures may drop to −15°C in colder districts.

The north‑east looks set to bear the brunt of snowfall by the end of the week, where drifts could reach up to 40 cm. These deeper snow accumulations raise the risk of blocked or slow roads in rural and exposed locations and may disrupt local services.

Into the weekend, the snowfall is expected to continue alongside persistent gusty winds, fog and icy roads. Night-time frost will peak, with readings forecast to range between −6°C and −20°C in the coldest areas. Daytime temperatures will moderate slightly but are still likely to remain between −3°C and −7°C.

Public services and emergency responders are likely to be on heightened alert. Residents are advised to monitor local weather updates and heed any travel advisories. Households should check heating systems, ensure supplies for cold conditions and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy snow and strong winds.

In summary, the coming week in Belarus will be characterised by continued winter hazards: severe cold, persistent snow and gusty winds. Those travelling should prepare for poor visibility, icy roads and the potential for significant snow accumulations, particularly across the north‑east by the end of the week.

Key Takeaways:

  • Belarus weather forecast warns of prolonged cold, heavy snow and gusty winds through the coming week.
  • Night-time temperatures will fall as low as -20°C in places, with daytime highs largely between -3°C and -8°C.
  • Road conditions will deteriorate: icy surfaces, reduced visibility and possible snow drifts up to 40 cm in the north-east.
  • Authorities and drivers are urged to prepare for hazardous travel and limited visibility of 1–3 km.
