Brazil’s Caixa delays Mega da Virada draw after technical glitch

Caixa Econômica Federal has postponed the Mega da Virada 2025 draw until the morning of 1 January after experiencing technical difficulties that affected the processing of bets. The special contest, which carries a record prize of R$1.09 billion, had originally been scheduled for the evening of 31 December but will now take place at 10:00 and be broadcast on Caixa’s official YouTube and Facebook channels.

Mega da Virada delay caused by technical issues

The bank said the decision followed an operational failure in the platforms that manage ticket validation and bet processing. Officials reported unusually high volumes of traffic across channels this year, with digital platforms reaching peaks of up to 120,000 transactions per second and retail points recording roughly 5,000 bets per second. Those volumes, Caixa said, exceeded internal expectations and strained the systems responsible for consolidating entries.

Transmission of the draw had been programmed to begin at 22:00 on 31 December, but the live feed did not start at the scheduled hour. Viewers and participants took to social media to voice their concerns and demand clarification. Around an hour after the planned start time, Caixa issued an official statement confirming the postponement and announcing the rescheduled time.

The delay affects a contest that traditionally attracts heavy participation as bettors aim for the year-end jackpot. The Mega da Virada is one of Brazil’s most watched lottery events, and tickets for the special draw are sold both online and at thousands of physical lottery outlets. Caixa emphasised that all registered bets would remain valid and that the postponement would not alter the prize distribution or the rules governing the contest.

Industry observers noted that high demand for major draws can create pressure on legacy systems when traffic spikes in short periods. Caixa indicated it will review the incident and assess whether further investments or contingency measures are required to handle similar peaks in future events. The institution also highlighted that the livestream of the draw will be available via its established social channels to ensure transparency.

For participants, the immediate concern is confirmation that their bets were processed and remain eligible. Caixa’s note reassured the public that the recorded volumes were being analysed and that safeguards were in place to preserve ticket integrity. Customers seeking confirmation can consult official Caixa channels or the regulatory pages provided by the bank.

While the postponement generated frustration among players who expected the customary New Year spectacle, the institution’s quick rescheduling and public statements aimed to reduce uncertainty. The bank has a record of running large-scale draws, but this instance underlined the challenges of coping with sudden surges in digital traffic during peak moments.

The source for the original report was Bahia Notícias. Caixa’s announcement set the draw for 10:00 on 1 January and confirmed the broadcast schedule. Bettors and the public were advised to follow Caixa’s official YouTube and Facebook channels for live coverage and any further updates.

Key Takeaways:

  • Caixa postponed the Mega da Virada 2025 draw to 10:00 on 1 January due to processing problems.
  • The record R$1.09 billion prize attracted unprecedented traffic, peaking at 120,000 digital transactions per second.
  • Live transmission failed at the scheduled time and the draw will be streamed on Caixa’s official YouTube and Facebook channels.
  • Caixa attributed the postponement to unexpected volumes in both digital platforms and lottery outlets.
