The first minutes of 2026 brought celebration to families and hospital teams across Rio de Janeiro as two infants arrived in the city’s public health network. Miguel and Ayla were both born in the first minute of the year, sparking a friendly race to be known as the city’s first newborns of 2026.

first babies born in Rio 2026

Miguel was born by caesarean at 00:00:20 on 1 January at Hospital Municipal Miguel Couto, in the Leblon district of the South Zone. He weighed 3.055 kg and measured 46 cm. His parents, Roberta Ribeiro and Cleber Silva, who are residents of Vidigal, described the arrival as the happiest moment of their lives. Roberta said the delivery team provided constant support and that the family felt surrounded by care and attention.

Shortly afterwards, at 00:01, Ayla was born naturally at Maternidade Herculano Pinheiro in Madureira, North Zone. The newborn weighed 3.245 kg and measured 49 cm. She is the first child of Fernanda Ferreira and Yago Teixeira. The family said the child had already brought immense joy to relatives and friends. Fernanda expressed gratitude towards the medical team for their attentive care and for helping to ensure a calm labour.

Both hospitals reported that mother and baby pairs were in good health following the deliveries. Staff at the municipal maternity units welcomed the births as a positive start to the year, offering praise for the coordinated work of obstetricians, midwives and nursing teams who assisted during the busy holiday period.

The informal contest to claim the title of the city’s first baby is a familiar New Year tradition in many Brazilian cities. While the designation is symbolic, it highlights the human stories behind public health services and the families who depend on them. For the parents, the timing of the births added to the emotional significance of the day.

Hospital officials emphasised that ensuring safe deliveries throughout the year remains a priority, noting continued investments in training and resources for maternity care across municipal units. Local health authorities also encouraged community members to keep routine prenatal appointments and to seek hospital care promptly when labour begins.

For Roberta and Cleber, Miguel’s arrival completed a joyful start to the year. For Fernanda and Yago, Ayla’s birth marked the beginning of family life with their first child. Both couples spoke warmly of the community support they received and of the relief of seeing their newborns healthy and content.

As Rio’s public hospitals welcomed these first arrivals, staff and families alike marked the moment as a hopeful start to 2026. The celebrations were modest but heartfelt, reflecting the private happiness of new parents and the public commitment of municipal health teams to safe births across the city.
