Around 6.40pm on Thursday 1 January 2026, lifeguards in Armação dos Búzios launched a prompt rescue after two children were pulled away from shore by a strong rip current at Geribá beach. The swift intervention by the rescue team ensured both children were brought to safety conscious and without injuries.

Búzios beach rescue saved two children

Witnesses reported the youngsters struggled to reach the sand after being caught by the current. Lifeguards immediately identified the danger and executed a coordinated rescue, guiding the children to a nearby sandbank where medics stabilised the situation before they were escorted back to shore.

The lifeguards who took part in the operation were named as Nitai, Wellington Maia, Bernardo Sales and Junior Barbosa. Their rapid, disciplined response was credited with preventing a potential drowning and ensuring the incident concluded with a positive outcome.

Local rescue officials said both children were removed from the water conscious and without visible injuries. They received a routine check at the scene and were reported to be in good condition afterwards. Authorities declined to disclose further personal details due to the victims’ ages.

Rip currents are a common hazard at many Brazilian beaches, particularly in the late afternoon when tidal and wind conditions can strengthen flows away from the shore. The Corpo de Guarda-Vidas de Búzios used the incident to remind beachgoers to pay attention to warning signs, stay within supervised areas and follow the guidance of lifeguards on duty.

“Respect the flags and the lifeguards’ instructions,” a spokesperson for the rescue corps said. “If you are unsure about conditions, avoid entering the water. These currents can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers.”

The rescue highlights both the risks present at popular coastal destinations and the value of trained rescue teams. Geribá beach is one of Búzios’ most frequented shores, drawing locals and tourists alike. Incidents of this type, while relatively rare, underline the need for constant vigilance from both the public and safety services.

Authorities recommend that families with young children remain close to lifeguarded zones and avoid the water during periods when currents are known to be stronger. Beachgoers should also acquaint themselves with signals used by lifeguards and the meaning of flag systems that indicate sea conditions.

Local officials said they will continue patrolling Geribá and other beaches in the municipality and remain prepared to respond to emergencies. The community and visiting public were urged to cooperate with safety measures to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future.

The successful rescue at Geribá is a reminder of the crucial role lifeguards play in coastal safety and the positive impact of rapid, coordinated action during emergencies.

Key Takeaways:

  • Two children were rescued by Búzios lifeguards after being swept out by strong currents at Geribá beach.
  • The victims were taken to a sandbank, stabilised and removed from the water conscious and uninjured.
  • The swift action of lifeguards Nitai, Wellington Maia, Bernardo Sales and Junior Barbosa prevented a possible drowning.
  • Authorities warn bathers to heed signs and avoid late-afternoon swimming when currents often strengthen, highlighting the importance of the Búzios beach rescue.
