The State Centre for Dentistry for Special Patients (Ceope) in Mato Grosso delivered 32,481 dental procedures in 2025, reinforcing its role as a key specialised service within Brazil’s state health network. The unit, managed by the State Health Secretariat (SES-MT), recorded a high throughput of routine and specialist care that supports both everyday oral health needs and more complex pre-transplant requirements.
Ceope dental care Brazil and transplant screening
Among the most common procedures carried out at Ceope were corono-radicular scaling (2,831 procedures), topical fluoride application (1,870), prophylaxis and plaque removal (1,701) and supra-gingival scaling and polishing (1,504). These figures reflect steady demand for both preventive and restorative services at the specialised centre.
Crucially, Ceope also acts as the regional reference for pre-kidney transplant dental assessment. Over the year the centre performed 275 pre-transplant evaluations through three focused outreach efforts, known locally as mutirões. The first mutirão produced 60 procedures, the second 121 and the third 94, combining clinical consultations, dental treatments and requests for complementary tests.
Health authorities said the targeted screenings are essential. Any oral infection in patients with renal insufficiency poses a greater risk following transplantation, when immunosuppression increases vulnerability to systemic infections. By addressing dental issues before surgery, Ceope contributes to safer transplant outcomes and improved patient quality of life.
“Ceope fulfils a fundamental role in the state health network by offering specialised and humane dental care to those who need it most,” said Gilberto Figueiredo, Secretary of State for Health. He added that the unit’s involvement in pre-transplant assessments enhances patient safety and long-term wellbeing.
Martha Aquilino, director of the unit, praised her team’s dedication. “Our staff work with responsibility to ensure qualified and safe care for our patients. The results are a reflection of the professionals’ commitment and of integrated work preparing patients for kidney transplant,” she said, noting that the mutirões expand access and reduce oral health risks for this specific group.
Ceope is accredited by Brazil’s Ministry of Health as a Centre of Dental Specialities and provides care in endodontics, periodontics, minor oral surgery, restorative dentistry, removable prosthetics and paediatric dentistry. The centre also offers diagnostic services for early detection of oral cancer and provides training in oral cancer diagnosis to strengthen local capacity.
All Ceope appointments and services are scheduled through the state’s Regulation System (Sisreg), ensuring patients are routed to the appropriate specialist care. By combining high procedural volume with targeted pre-transplant screening and capacity-building activities, the centre demonstrates a model of specialised oral healthcare aimed at reducing risks for vulnerable populations and improving overall public-health outcomes in Mato Grosso.
For patients and referring clinicians, the centre’s performance this year underscores the importance of integrated oral care within broader medical pathways, particularly for those awaiting complex interventions such as organ transplantation.
