Southern Railway has announced a set of timetable revisions for AC electric multiple unit (EMU) services on the Chennai Beach–Thambaram–Chengalpattu corridor. The changes, which take effect from 5 January, adjust the departure and arrival times of three AC EMU trains and add stops to four services to better serve commuters along the suburban route.
Chennai AC train timetable change
The principal adjustments move one AC EMU to operate between Chennai Beach and Thambaram. That service will depart Chennai Beach at 15:47 and reach Thambaram at 16:42. A Chengalpattu to Chennai Beach AC service will run between Thambaram and Chennai Beach, leaving Thambaram at 17:00 and arriving at Chennai Beach at 17:55. Another AC service from Thambaram to Chennai Beach will depart Thambaram at 14:28 and reach Chennai Beach at 15:23.
In addition to these timing changes, Southern Railway has authorised extra commercial halts for four AC EMU services. Trains on the Thambaram–Chengalpattu, Chengalpattu–Chennai Beach, Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu and Chengalpattu–Thambaram legs will call at Urappakkam from 5 January. The extra stops aim to improve access for residents of intermediate suburbs and reduce crowding at nearby stations.
Officials say the adjustments are intended to streamline suburban operations and provide more consistent connections for passengers travelling between the city and outer suburbs. The timetable revision also requires changes to the schedules of nine non-AC local services so that platform and crossing conflicts are minimised.
Key timing shifts to local services include:
- The train from Thirumalpur to Chennai Beach will now reach Thambaram at 13:10 instead of 13:15 and Chennai Beach at 14:05 instead of 14:10.
- A Thambaram departure previously scheduled for 13:32 will now leave at 13:30 and is expected at Chennai Beach at 14:25 rather than 14:27.
- Services leaving Chennai Beach in the afternoon have been advanced by several minutes. For example, the 15:45 departure will now leave at 15:39 and the corresponding Thambaram arrival has moved from 16:40 to 16:35.
- Evening services from Thambaram have also been brought forward. A 16:35 departure will now leave at 16:30 and reach Chennai Beach at 17:25 rather than 17:30. Another service leaving Thambaram at 17:00 will now depart at 16:53 and arrive at Chennai Beach at 17:48.
- Late-night adjustments affect services from Guduvancheri and Chengalpattu, with departures and arrivals altered by 20 to 40 minutes in some cases to fit the revised pattern.
Passengers are advised to check the updated timetable on the Southern Railway website or at station enquiry counters before travelling. Railway officials recommend allowing extra time for journeys during the initial days while commuters and staff adapt to the new schedule.
The company said these changes are part of ongoing efforts to enhance suburban rail capacity and reliability across Chennai’s commuter network. Further adjustments may follow based on operational feedback and passenger demand.
