China New Year Holiday Boosts Outdoor Gear Sales as Guilin Hiking Routes Draw Crowds

The New Year holiday sparked a fresh wave of interest in outdoor activities across Guangxi province, with retailers reporting brisk sales of hiking and camping equipment and several local trails drawing larger crowds than in previous seasons. Authorities and merchants said short, scenic routes around Guilin and nearby Nanning proved particularly popular among families and weekend walkers.

Guilin hiking routes see surge in popularity

Travel agents and outdoor shops in Guilin said demand for daypacks, hiking boots, lightweight jackets and portable stoves rose sharply in the run-up to the holiday. Many shoppers favoured entry-level gear suitable for short hikes rather than more technical equipment, reflecting a broadening interest among casual walkers and tourists.

Local trail managers reported that well-known riverside and mountain paths attracted sustained numbers of visitors, while lesser-known routes saw a steady trickle of hikers seeking less crowded terrain. The Li River area, celebrated for its karst peaks and river scenery, remains a major draw, combining accessible routes with iconic views that appeal to both domestic and visiting holidaymakers.

Safety and services adapted to higher demand

With more people on the trails, local authorities emphasised safety and preparedness. Rescue teams in the region have continued training and staging joint patrols to respond quickly to calls for help. Officials urged walkers to check weather forecasts, carry adequate water and clothing, travel in groups where possible and follow marked trails to reduce the risk of accidents.

Retailers and tour operators also adjusted their services. Several shops extended opening hours and stocked popular low-cost items to meet last-minute demand, while guided-walk operators increased the number of short, family-friendly excursions. Some local markets and small vendors set up temporary stalls near transport hubs and trailheads to supply snacks, maps and basic outdoor supplies.

Economic lift for local businesses

Shopkeepers described the holiday surge as a welcome boost after seasonal lulls. Smaller outdoor retailers reported that sales of entry-level footwear, rainwear and portable lights were particularly strong, while rental services for trekking poles and compact backpacks gained traction among tourists unwilling to transport bulky gear.

Hospitality businesses also benefited. Guesthouses and small hotels in trail towns reported higher occupancy for the holiday period, with many bookings coming from domestic travellers seeking short escapes rather than long-distance trips. Local eateries noted increased foot traffic along popular routes, contributing to a wider distribution of tourism income.

Outlook and advice for visitors

Experts expect interest in outdoor activities to remain steady in the near term, driven by public enthusiasm for short, accessible hikes and the appeal of Guilin’s scenery. Visitors are advised to plan ahead, respect local guidelines and prioritise safety. For those new to hiking, choosing well-marked routes and travelling with experienced companions will reduce exposure to common risks.

As demand for outdoor recreation grows, the focus for authorities and businesses will be on balancing access with safety and environmental stewardship to ensure that both visitors and local communities can enjoy the benefits of increased tourism without undue strain on resources.

Key Takeaways:

  • New Year holiday in China drives stronger outdoor gear sales and greater interest in local trails.
  • Guilin hiking routes see increased footfall as visitors seek short hikes and scenic walks.
  • Retailers and local authorities respond with safety advice and better services to meet demand.
