President Miguel Díaz-Canel has urged Cubans to keep working together and remain united as the nation looks ahead to 2026, a year that will mark the 67th anniversary of the Revolution and the centenary of Fidel Castro. Posting on his X account, the president reflected on the achievements of 2025 and appealed for collective effort to turn policy into visible improvements in people’s daily lives.

Cuban president calls for unity ahead of 2026

In his message, Díaz-Canel wrote that Cubans should “celebrate the lives saved and the impossibles overcome in 2025” and receive 2026 with the conviction that “by working and staying united, we grow”. He described the Revolution as a single project, with its accomplishments and its unfinished tasks, and said that unity remains the defining and saving quality for the nation.

The president urged authorities to ensure that every law, plan and budget becomes a tangible action that improves living standards. He highlighted science and innovation as essential tools to deliver concrete solutions and called for an economic recovery that restores vitality without sacrificing social justice.

Díaz-Canel also framed 2026 as a renewal of national tradition. He declared the year the “Year of the Centenary of Fidel” and said that a people who resist and create deserve to renew their triumphs. The message closed with the rallying word “We will prevail”, underlining the government’s determination to press ahead on its policy priorities.

The appeal comes as Cuba navigates a complex mix of domestic economic challenges and international pressures. While the president’s tone was forward-looking, his call that budgets and plans be converted into actions underscores widespread public expectations for tangible improvements in areas such as employment, services and innovation.

Observers note that the emphasis on science and innovation aims to spur practical advances in healthcare, agriculture and industry. For a country that has long invested in medical research and education, those sectors are often presented as engines for growth and resilience. The president’s remarks suggest a continued policy focus on deploying research and technical know-how to address everyday problems.

As a BRICS partner, Cuba’s political signals are watched for how they may influence diplomatic and economic ties across the Global South. The call for unity and social justice also speaks to domestic legitimacy as authorities prepare national commemorations and policy programmes for the coming year.

For now, the administration’s immediate challenge will be to demonstrate progress that matches the rhetoric. Turning plans into palpable change will require targeted investment, implementation capacity and measurable outcomes that citizens can perceive in their neighbourhoods and workplaces.

With national celebrations on the horizon, Díaz-Canel’s message sets a tone of optimism and resolve. Whether the coming months deliver the economic recovery and social improvements the president seeks will be an important test for policymakers and a central theme of public debate as Cuba enters 2026.
