Residents of Darbhanga welcomed the new year with enthusiasm and communal spirit as streets, temples and homes across the city filled with celebratory activity. From midnight fireworks to early morning rituals, the day combined traditional observance with lively social gatherings.

Darbhanga New Year celebrations

As clocks struck midnight, shouts of “Happy New Year” echoed through neighbourhoods, while fireworks lit the winter sky. Many people visited local shrines, seeking blessings and offering prayers to begin the year on a hopeful note. Devotees thronged Shyam Dham and other well-known temples such as Saidnagar Kali Temple, Kankali Temple and Panchanath, keeping temple precincts busy from dawn until late evening.

Early on the first day, families performed customary rituals. After their morning ablutions, households observed puja and elders blessed younger relatives. These rites were followed by visits to nearby temples where worshippers bowed at the feet of the deities and prayed for health and prosperity in the year ahead.

The city’s youth played a prominent role in the festivities. Groups of young people organised New Year parties, rode through the streets on motorbikes and gathered in rural picnic spots when access to urban picnic grounds was restricted. Despite the cold, laughter and music were a constant throughout the day, with many continuing celebrations well into the early hours.

Food featured strongly in the celebrations. Non-vegetarian households prepared dishes such as fish, mutton and chicken, while vegetarian families shared kheer, puri and other traditional items. Sweet shops reported brisk sales as families bought mithai to share with guests. Local restaurants and hotels also registered heavy footfall, with many establishments decorated a day in advance for the occasion.

The festive mood brought a welcome boost for small vendors and service providers. Sellers of fireworks, snacks and sweets saw increased demand, and hotel and restaurant operators benefited from higher bookings. For many residents, the day provided both a cultural reaffirmation and an economic uptick.

Even as celebrations continued, there was an evident respect for tradition. Families combined social merriment with religious observance, ensuring that the new year began with both joy and spiritual reflection. Elders were honoured and blessings were sought for the well-being of households throughout the coming year.

Public spaces around the Raj Parisar and museum campus drew steady crowds, and stretches along the four-lane road between Darbhanga and Samastipur became impromptu picnic sites. Groups gathered under stars and on riverbanks to enjoy music and food, returning home by nightfall after a day of communal togetherness.

The new year’s arrival in Darbhanga was marked by a blend of age-old rituals and contemporary celebration. For residents, the day reinforced social bonds and offered renewed optimism for the months ahead as families and friends came together to exchange good wishes and begin the year with shared hope.

Key Takeaways:

  • Darbhanga New Year celebrations saw widespread temple visits, fireworks and community gatherings across the city.
  • Shyam Dham and other local temples drew large crowds seeking blessings and taking part in traditional rituals.
  • Youth-led street festivities, picnics and hotel bookings marked a vibrant social revival despite cold weather.
  • Local vendors and eateries reported strong sales of sweets and festive dishes, underscoring an upbeat local economy.
