Vinay Hegde, a well-known educationist and philanthropist from coastal Karnataka, was remembered on Friday at a large public tribute in Mangalore following his death.

Vinay Hegde’s legacy in education and healthcare

The tribute, held at the Sharda Vidyalaya auditorium in Kodyalbail, brought together religious leaders, educationists, former administrators and community figures who praised Hegde’s decades-long commitment to public service. Speakers described him as a unifying figure whose work across education, industry and health changed the lives of thousands.

Dr B.A. Vivek Rai, retired vice-chancellor of Hampi University, said Hegde stood apart as an exceptional leader for the Karavali region. “There is no one to match Vinay Hegde,” he said, adding that Hegde had been the driving strength behind many local initiatives. He urged followers to honour Hegde by carrying forward his ideals.

Attendees recalled Hegde’s modest beginnings. He started a Kannada school in the small village of Nitte and gradually expanded it into a broad educational institution. Under his stewardship Nitte developed into a recognised centre for learning. Alongside education, Hegde encouraged industrial development in the area and helped create employment for thousands.

Bishop Dr Peter Paul Saldanha of the Mangalore Christian Diocese described Hegde as a man of gentle demeanour and conviction. He noted the significant contributions Hegde made to medical and educational services, which improved access to care and learning for many people in the region.

Kanchuru Monu, president of the Kanchuru trust, paid tribute to Hegde’s role in supporting the growth of Kanchuru Medical College. “The college stands today in part because of his support,” he said, emphasising that Hegde offered consistent assistance to community institutions.

Several other speakers highlighted Hegde’s hands-on approach to social welfare. Professor M.B. Puranik, president of the Sharda Vidya institutions, said Hegde had elevated the profile of Nitte on the national map. Dr Satish Kumar Bhandari, vice-chancellor of Nitte University, praised Hegde’s efforts to make healthcare affordable and available, noting that Hegde always prioritised public benefit over personal gain.

Former officials and civic leaders including D. Vedavyasa Kamath, Prabhakar Sharma, Dr Prashant Maral and Harikrishna Punaruru paid their respects, as did journalists and banking officials. The assembled tributes emphasised Hegde’s discipline, philanthropic spirit and the broad social footprint of his work.

Organisers and admirers say the best way to honour Hegde is to sustain the institutions and services he nurtured. His initiatives in education, industry and healthcare form a tangible legacy that continues to benefit coastal Karnataka. The public gathering in Mangalore served as both a farewell and a reminder of the long-term impact a dedicated local leader can have on community development.

Flowers and condolences were offered by a wide cross-section of society, reflecting the esteem in which Hegde was held. As leaders and citizens reflect on his contributions, many pledged to preserve and extend the work he began so it may continue to serve future generations.

Key Takeaways:

  • Vinay Hegde, a prominent leader from coastal Karnataka, is remembered for founding schools and expanding health services in India.
  • Speakers at the public tribute in Mangalore highlighted his role in Nitte’s growth, job creation and affordable medical care.
  • Community leaders and clergy applauded his discipline, generosity and lasting impact on education and industry.
