Gujarat to develop five satellite towns with metro-style facilities by 2030

Gujarat has announced plans to develop five satellite towns equipped with metro-style facilities and enhanced economic capacity to ease pressure on major cities by 2030. The state government said master plans will be prepared for Sanand (near Ahmedabad), Savli (Vadodara), Kalol (Gandhinagar), Bardoli (Surat) and Hirasar (Rajkot), with planners being appointed through invited tenders.

Gujarat satellite towns to relieve urban pressure

The state aims to make these towns reachable within an hour of the main cities and to generate new employment opportunities while providing world-class infrastructure and citizen-focused services. Officials said the projects will reduce the burden on existing urban centres by strengthening local economies and improving quality of life outside core city boundaries.

According to the government release, each satellite town will feature well-organised public transport systems with electric bus services, state-of-the-art water supply and waste management, ring roads to ease traffic, urban forest parks and scenic lakes. Planners are expected to design mixed-use neighbourhoods that place offices, homes and shops in close proximity, reducing commute times and encouraging local commerce.

“The vision is aligned with the national objective of Viksit Bharat by 2047,” the release said, adding that the Gujarat administration under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has prioritised the strategic growth of Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns. The state is initiating the tendering process to appoint urban planners to draw up detailed master plans for each location.

Beyond transport and public amenities, the plans emphasise resilience and safety. Proposals include modern fire stations, advanced waste-treatment systems and improved water infrastructure to support sustainable expansion. Urban planners will also be expected to incorporate green open spaces to improve climate resilience and liveability.

Economic planners in the state expect the development of these satellite towns to stimulate local industry clusters. Sanand, home to a number of manufacturing units, and Savli, with its industrial corridors near Vadodara, are expected to benefit from upgraded infrastructure that could attract further investment. Bardoli and Hirasar will be positioned to support Surat and Rajkot respectively, offering new residential and commercial capacity for growing urban populations.

Implementation will require coordination across state departments, private developers and central government programmes. Funding sources were not detailed in the release, though such projects typically combine state budgets, central allocations, public-private partnerships and private investment. Timely tendering and robust master plans will be crucial to meet the 2030 target.

Urban planners will also face challenges including land acquisition, integration with existing transport networks and ensuring affordable housing options. Officials say the emphasis on mixed-use development and public transport should mitigate some housing and congestion pressures, provided planning and execution remain on schedule.

For residents, the proposed satellite towns promise shorter commutes, improved public services and new job opportunities outside city centres. For Gujarat, the initiative could rebalance regional growth, reduce strain on major metropolitan areas and foster more evenly distributed economic development across the state.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gujarat will develop five satellite towns — Sanand, Savli, Kalol, Bardoli and Hirasar — with metro-like infrastructure by 2030.
  • State has invited urban planners through tenders to prepare master plans and strengthen local economies to ease pressure on major cities.
  • Planned features include electric public transport, advanced water and waste systems, ring roads, urban parks and mixed-use development.
