Heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh has prompted cold wave warnings across four districts, with the state capital Shimla registering a fall in temperature of 5.4 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued snow and biting cold over the next four days, urging residents and visitors to take precautions.

Himachal Pradesh snowfall warning

Snowfall was reported on New Year’s Day in several high-altitude areas, affecting routine life and travel. Local authorities said the intensity of the snowfall varied by region, with hill stations and mountain passes recording the most significant accumulation. Shimla’s sudden temperature drop has heightened concerns about road safety, power supply and the health of vulnerable groups such as the elderly and infants.

The IMD has issued advisories for four districts where the cold wave is expected to persist. Motorists are warned to expect slippery roads and reduced visibility at higher elevations. District administrations have mobilised crews for road clearance and are coordinating with the police and public works departments to keep critical routes open. Residents in remote hamlets have been asked to ensure adequate fuel and warm clothing and to check on neighbours who may be at risk.

Tourism, a vital source of income for many Himachal communities, has been hit. While snowfall attracts visitors to popular resorts and creates demand for winter leisure activities, authorities cautioned that sudden weather changes can cause transport delays, cancellations and safety hazards. Hoteliers and tour operators have been advised to keep guests informed about travel conditions and to provide contingency plans where required.

Power and communication networks can be affected when heavy snow accumulates on lines and infrastructure. Local electricity boards reported transient outages in some hilly pockets and said restoration teams were on standby. Telecommunications providers also warned of possible service disruptions in the most elevated areas until conditions improve.

Public health officials emphasised practical measures to reduce cold-related risks. They recommended staying indoors during the coldest hours, wearing layered clothing, using safe heating methods to prevent indoor pollution or fires, and seeking prompt medical attention for symptoms of hypothermia or respiratory distress. Vaccination clinics and healthcare centres in district towns remain operational to assist those in need.

Authorities urged commuters to monitor official weather bulletins and follow advisories from the IMD and local administrations. Those planning travel to Himachal Pradesh over the coming days should check road conditions, carry emergency supplies and be prepared for delays. Mountaineering and trekking groups were advised to postpone non-essential expeditions until the weather stabilises.

Forecasters said the cold spell is linked to western disturbances interacting with local topography, which typically bring winter precipitation to the north-western Himalayan region. The IMD will continue to issue updates; residents and visitors should remain alert and take sensible precautions until the warnings are lifted.

Key Takeaways:

  • Heavy snowfall and a pronounced cold wave have affected four districts of Himachal Pradesh, with Shimla recording a sharp temperature drop.
  • The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings for continuing cold conditions and snowfall over the next four days.
  • Transport and tourism sectors face disruptions; authorities have issued safety advisories for residents and travellers.
