Key Takeaways:

  • Protect furniture and floors by removing items and covering surfaces before painting — essential home repainting tips.
  • Clean and repair walls, seal cracks, and use primer for a longer lasting finish.
  • Follow the right painting order: ceiling, walls, trims and doors, and use quality brushes and rollers.
  • Hire experienced painters and confirm primer and two finish coats in the contract for best results.

Repainting a home can transform interiors, but without careful planning it quickly becomes a messy and costly job. These practical home repainting tips will help you protect belongings, prepare surfaces properly and achieve a durable, professional finish.

home repainting tips: prepare and protect before you start

Begin by clearing the room as much as possible. Remove furniture when you can, and cover any remaining pieces with dust sheets. Protect floors using kraft paper, canvas drop cloths or specialised protective sheets to catch drips and spills. Place a large dustbin close to the work area to collect waste as you go, keeping the site tidy and reducing the risk of accidental stains.

When painting, protecting other surfaces is as important as applying the paint. Use good-quality masking tape on edges and around switches, sockets and skirting boards. Proper protection reduces the need for touch-ups and prevents damage to valuable items.

Clean, inspect and repair surfaces

Thorough surface preparation is the foundation of any successful repaint. Wash walls to remove dust, grease and mildew. If you find flaking paint, loose plaster or other residues, remove them with a scraper. Any holes or cracks should be filled and smoothed before painting. For structural gaps use an appropriate filler such as plaster of Paris or cement-based mixes, and allow repairs to dry fully.

Check for damp patches, leaks or peeling areas on ceilings and walls. Address the source of any moisture before repainting. For exterior walls, many professionals recommend using a high-pressure cleaner to remove ingrained dirt; these machines can be hired and will deliver a much cleaner surface than brushing alone.

Choose materials and the correct painting sequence

Match paint colours to your interior plan before work begins. Selecting colours early helps you visualise the end result and avoid costly changes. Use a primer on bare or repaired surfaces to improve adhesion and coverage, particularly when covering dark or stained areas.

Follow the standard painting sequence to achieve the cleanest lines and most even finish: start with the ceiling, then paint the upper walls, followed by trims, cabinets and doors. Always work from top to bottom and complete whole sections rather than stopping midway. This approach keeps edges consistent and reduces visible joins.

Use the right tools and hire trusted professionals

Invest in quality brushes and rollers to prevent brush marks and shedding bristles, which can spoil a smooth finish. Rollers with the appropriate nap for your wall texture will speed up work and improve coverage. For exterior cleaning, consider hiring a high-pressure cleaner rather than relying on traditional scraping brushes.

If you choose a contractor, select experienced painters and set expectations in writing. Specify that the job must include a coat of primer and two finish coats, and confirm timelines and protection measures for furniture and floors. Experienced professionals will also advise on drying times, ventilation and aftercare.

By planning carefully, protecting your home and using the right materials, repainting need not be a headache. Follow these home repainting tips to reduce risk, save time and enjoy a long-lasting, attractive finish.
