Hyundai Motor India closed calendar year 2025 on a strong note after its best-selling model, the Creta, recorded more than 200,000 units sold. The figure marks the highest annual tally for the mid-size SUV and re-establishes the Creta as India’s most popular SUV, nearly a decade after its debut.
Hyundai Creta sales hit milestone in 2025
Hyundai sold an average of about 550 Creta SUVs every day in 2025, a remarkable achievement in a segment that sees frequent new launches and intense competition. The Creta’s sustained sales momentum has enabled Hyundai to lead the mid-size SUV category on a cumulative basis for the past five years.
According to Hyundai Motor India, the Creta delivered a compound annual growth rate of over 9 percent between 2016 and 2025, and it now commands more than 34 percent of the mid-size SUV market. Tarun Garg, Managing Director and CEO of Hyundai Motor India Limited, said the Creta has evolved from a capable SUV into a trusted choice for Indian families, daily commuting and road travel.
Significant shifts in buyer profiles have helped drive the Creta’s performance. The share of first-time car buyers purchasing the Creta rose from 13 percent in 2020 to 32 percent in 2025, indicating that many customers are upgrading to a premium SUV for the first time. Additionally, variants equipped with sunroofs accounted for over 70 percent of Creta sales in 2025, signifying a clear preference for feature-rich models.
Fuel choice remains diverse among buyers. Diesel models made up 44 percent of Creta sales this year, while petrol and turbo petrol options continue to attract large numbers of customers. Hyundai’s strategy of offering multiple engine and transmission combinations appears to be paying dividends. The line-up includes a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a 1.5-litre diesel, and a 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit, with a variety of manual and automatic gearboxes on offer.
Hyundai has also introduced an electric version of the Creta, which broadens the model’s appeal as buyers begin to consider EVs for everyday use. The availability of an electric variant positions the Creta to meet evolving regulatory requirements and consumer demand for lower-emission options.
Industry analysts say the Creta’s success stems from a combination of brand recognition, regular updates, strong retail presence and a flexible product portfolio. By catering to first-time buyers as well as repeat customers seeking additional features, Hyundai has kept the Creta relevant across multiple age groups and income brackets.
As competition in the mid-size SUV category intensifies, maintaining market share will require ongoing product refreshes and an emphasis on value-for-money features. For now, however, the Creta’s 2025 performance underlines Hyundai’s ability to retain consumer trust and adapt to changing preferences within the Indian market.
