IIT Hyderabad Student Secures Rs 2.5 Crore Salary Package

A 21-year-old final-year computer science student at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad has secured a pre-placement offer worth Rs 2.5 crore, marking the highest package in the institute’s history.

Edward Nathan Varghese, who hails from Hyderabad, received the offer from global trading firm Optiver, based in the Netherlands. The offer follows a two-month internship at the company last year during which his technical performance and problem-solving skills impressed the hiring team. He will join Optiver as a software engineer in July.

IIT Hyderabad salary package breaks institute record

The Rs 2.5 crore package surpasses the previous high recorded in 2017, when the top offer was around Rs 1 crore. Established in 2008, IIT Hyderabad’s placement statistics this season also show broader gains: the institute’s average package rose from Rs 20.8 lakh last year to Rs 36.2 lakh this year, and 24 international offers were reported in the first phase of placements.

Varghese attributes his success to sustained focus on competitive programming and algorithmic skills from the early years of his BTech. He was ranked among the country’s top competitive programmers and said the institute’s rigorous academic environment and peer culture helped sharpen his technical foundation.

Optiver’s offer is notable not only for its size but for being a pre-placement offer, converting an internship directly into a full-time role without an extended recruitment process. Industry observers say such conversions reflect growing demand for specialised software engineering talent in quantitative trading and financial technology firms globally.

Placement officials at IIT Hyderabad said the institute’s career services aim to match every student with opportunities suited to their skills, not merely to chase headline figures. The second phase of placements is under way, with emphasis on postgraduate candidates and diversified roles across sectors.

Beyond the top offer, several students received strong packages this year, including one student who secured a Rs 1.1 crore offer. The rise in average package and number of international offers suggests renewed confidence among global employers in Indian engineering talent despite wider economic headwinds and startup sector slowdowns.

Analysts note that high-value packages in niche areas such as quantitative trading, machine learning and systems engineering are increasingly shaping headline placement figures at premier engineering institutes. While such offers grab media attention, placement teams stress the importance of balanced outcomes across the student body.

Varghese’s case highlights a clear pathway for students: strong academic fundamentals, practical internship experience and consistent participation in competitive programming can open doors to global roles and lucrative compensation, even amid uncertain job markets. As IIT Hyderabad continues to report strong placement metrics, the institute reinforces its reputation as a source of skilled talent for both domestic and international employers.
