Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor and Lieutenant General Harpal Singh assumed important leadership positions on 1 January 2026, marking a change of guard at senior levels of India’s defence establishment. The appointments reflect a mix of operational experience and infrastructure expertise at a time when service readiness and border connectivity remain national priorities.

India military leadership appointments

Air Marshal Kapoor took charge as the Vice Chief of the Air Staff, succeeding Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, who superannuated after four decades of service. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College and the National Defence College, Kapoor is a seasoned fighter pilot with more than 3,400 flying hours on MiG-21 and MiG-29 platforms. His career includes key command, operational, instructional and staff responsibilities, among them appointments as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Training Command and of South Western Air Command.

Kapoor’s record includes multiple gallantry and distinguished service awards, a reflection of sustained operational contribution and leadership. As Vice Chief, he will play a central role in shaping Air Force priorities, force modernisation and training at a time when air power remains a core element of national defence strategy.

In the Army’s engineering arm, Lt Gen Harpal Singh assumed charge as the 29th Director General Border Roads and head of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in June 1991, he brings more than three decades of service across command, staff and leadership roles. On taking charge, he lauded the professionalism of BRO personnel and extended New Year 2026 greetings to all ranks.

Raised in 1960, the BRO has been charged with developing and maintaining strategic infrastructure in some of the country’s most testing terrains. Its work has been vital for operational mobility, civil access and economic connectivity in remote border regions. As Director General, Lt Gen Singh will oversee projects ranging from high-altitude road construction to bridges and maintenance works that underpin both defence posture and local development.

The simultaneous appointments underline the armed forces’ emphasis on continuity and experience. Kapoor’s operational flying background and command of major air formations position him to guide training and capability development within the Indian Air Force. Singh’s engineering and project management experience will be central to delivering and sustaining infrastructure that supports force deployment and broader regional connectivity.

Both leaders take office as India continues to invest in defence modernisation and infrastructure. The Air Force is pursuing upgrades across platforms and training regimes, while the BRO remains focused on ensuring year-round connectivity in sensitive border sectors. Their stewardship will be watched by defence planners and regional stakeholders alike.

The appointments are routine yet significant steps in the services’ leadership rotation. By placing experienced commanders at the helm, the Ministry of Defence aims to sustain operational preparedness and the delivery of critical projects that reinforce national security and support local economies in border areas.

Key Takeaways:

  • Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor took over as Vice Chief of the Air Staff on 1 January 2026, bringing extensive fighter and command experience.
  • Lt Gen Harpal Singh assumed charge as the 29th Director General Border Roads, heading the Border Roads Organisation.
  • These India military leadership appointments emphasise continuity in defence readiness and infrastructure development.
