The central government has approved a major road infrastructure package for Chhattisgarh worth ₹664.67 crore, authorising construction and upgrades totalling 173.70 kilometres. The approval, announced by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on social media, is expected to strengthen connectivity across Mungeli, Kanker, Sukma/Dantewada and Gariaband districts and accelerate development in remote parts of the state.

Funds for the work come from the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF). The chief minister acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for their support, saying the projects will play a decisive role in improving transportation safety and catalysing regional economic activity.

Chhattisgarh road projects to improve access in Bastar

Officials said the programme will particularly benefit the Bastar division, where many areas remain difficult to access and are affected by left-wing extremism. Improved roads will reduce travel times for residents, enhance delivery of public services and enable more reliable movement of goods.

Local administrations will oversee implementation once detailed project reports and tendering are complete. The state government has highlighted the expected gains in agricultural market access, easier movement for students and patients, and enhanced opportunities for local businesses to reach broader markets.

Chief Minister Sai described the approval as a significant boost delivered through coordinated efforts between the state and the central government. He offered his gratitude to the central leadership and said the projects reflect the ongoing focus on infrastructure in the state.

Transport analysts noted that strategic road upgrades in regions such as Dantewada and Sukma can contribute to both development and security objectives. Reliable road links help connect isolated communities to hospitals, schools and administrative centres. They also support faster response times for emergency services and may strengthen the presence of development initiatives in underserved areas.

Project proponents emphasise that the work will adhere to standard safety and environmental norms. Measures during construction will aim to limit disruptions and protect local ecosystems. Once completed, the new and upgraded roads are expected to lower vehicle operating costs and reduce accident risks through improved alignment and surface quality.

The announcement comes at a time when the state and central governments are prioritising infrastructure as a driver of economic recovery and inclusive growth. Officials say investments of this kind help generate employment during construction and bring long-term benefits by improving connectivity for farmers, traders and service providers.

Work schedules and detailed timelines will be published after contract awards. State and central authorities will monitor progress and maintain public updates to ensure transparency and timely completion. Local communities will be consulted where necessary to address route alignment and land acquisition issues.

With the CRIF approval now in place, Chhattisgarh officials expect the projects to deliver measurable improvements in mobility and local economic prospects, particularly in previously isolated parts of Bastar. The state said it remains committed to leveraging central support to strengthen infrastructure and expand development opportunities across all districts.
