Bhadravati, Karnataka — Parliamentarian B.Y. Raghavendra has announced a decisive step to modernise sporting facilities in Bhadravati by transferring management of the VASL sports complex to the Indian Sports Authority. The move, he said, will fast-track upgrades to the stadium, hockey ground and basketball court and bring the infrastructure up to national standards.

Raghavendra made the announcement while accepting the Gurubasava Shri award at the 114th memorial ceremony of Lingayikya Gurubasav Mahaswami held at Bekkinakalmata. He said the handover will be implemented quickly so that the complex can better serve athletes from the Shivamogga district and be a centre for training ahead of the 2028 Commonwealth Games in Gujarat.
The transfer of operational responsibility to the Indian Sports Authority is intended to ensure professional management, sustained maintenance and targeted investments in core facilities. Local officials have signalled state government support for the initiative, which is expected to improve coaching, competition venues and athlete preparation programmes.
Raghavendra emphasised the broader development benefits of the project. “Upgrading the VASL sports facilities will help prepare our players for national and international events,” he said, underlining the importance of modern infrastructure for nurturing talent in smaller districts.
He also urged local police leadership to review the effectiveness of CCTV cameras installed around the city, noting that concerns about theft, violent crime and road accidents remain a daily challenge. The MP instructed the superintendent of police to verify whether the surveillance system was functioning as intended and to take corrective action where necessary.
The announcement received praise from several regional leaders and organisers at the event. Former members of the legislative council and social figures highlighted Raghavendra’s hands-on approach to constituency development, citing his involvement in projects such as the Siganduru bridge and airport access improvements that have enhanced pilgrimage and visitor numbers.
Speakers at the ceremony also commended the local monastery for its long-standing social work, including food distribution and education, which they said complemented government efforts in the region. Awards were presented to local cultural figures, and religious leaders attended the ceremony.
Beyond stadium works, Raghavendra reaffirmed his commitment to improving regional connectivity. He reiterated a long-held ambition to introduce rail services across several taluks in the Shivamogga parliamentary constituency, promising progress on the issue within months.
Officials said the VASL revival will focus on restoring existing amenities, improving athlete support facilities and ensuring the complex is suitable for hosting regional competitions. The arrangement with the Indian Sports Authority is being presented as a model for how national bodies can partner with local constituencies to raise standards without losing community access.
As preparations for the 2028 Commonwealth Games gather momentum across India, initiatives such as the Bhadravati VASL upgrade are likely to draw attention as examples of targeted investment in sporting infrastructure aimed at widening the talent pipeline and boosting regional development.
