Work on a long-awaited upgrade to the Nedumkandam bus stand in Idukki district has gathered pace as local authorities move to transform the facility into a modern bus terminal. The project, financed in part from MLA M.M. Mani’s asset development fund, aims to deliver improved waiting spaces, better sanitation and accessibility for the many tourists and residents who use the stand to reach Munnar and Ramakkalmedu.

Nedumkandam bus terminal upgrade to improve access and hygiene

Residents and visitors have endured inadequate facilities for years. The foundation stone for a formal bus terminal was laid in September 2015, but progress stalled and the site continued to function with makeshift amenities. Second-floor toilets have been intermittently closed, with overflowing septic tanks and access to lavatories requiring steep iron steps. Such conditions have been particularly challenging for elderly passengers, people with disabilities and patients travelling for treatment.

Local panchayat officials say construction of the new terminal is now proceeding rapidly. The planned terminal will feature a wide, modern waiting area, an announcement cabin to improve passenger information and a dedicated mother-and-baby room. These additions are intended to raise the standard of services at the stand and better accommodate the steady stream of tourists and local commuters.

Officials have also committed to immediate remedial measures while the terminal is completed. The currently sealed public toilets will be reopened as an interim measure, and the panchayat is exploring whether existing rooms under its ownership can be repurposed to provide temporary facilities. In parallel, discussions are under way to construct a new, permanent toilet block on the ground floor in collaboration with the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The proposed toilet construction has an estimated budget of Rs 40 lakh. Authorities said the expenditure will cover a hygienic, accessible facility designed to serve travellers on both floors without the need to climb steep steps. This work is expected to remove an immediate public-health hazard caused by the overflowing septic systems and reduce closures that have hampered access.

Local stakeholders welcomed the renewed attention to the bus stand. For many in the surrounding highland communities, the stand is a vital transport node linking remote settlements to larger towns and tourist destinations. Improved facilities are likely to enhance passenger comfort and could support local tourism by presenting a more welcoming arrival point for visitors heading to Munnar and Ramakkalmedu.

Panchayat officials emphasised that the terminal construction and sanitation upgrades will proceed concurrently. They said contractors are mobilising on site and that the project will remain a priority until completion. The combined focus on modernisation and immediate sanitary improvements aims to deliver both short-term relief and a long-term upgrade to public transport infrastructure in Nedumkandam.

As works progress, authorities intend to keep the public informed about timelines and interim arrangements, particularly for vulnerable passengers. The upgraded terminal is expected to provide safer, cleaner and more accessible services, signalling a tangible improvement in local civic amenities funded through elected representatives and state-supported sanitation initiatives.

Key Takeaways:

  • Construction of the Nedumkandam bus terminal upgrade has accelerated with funding from MLA M.M. Mani’s asset development fund.
  • The project will provide a spacious modern waiting area, announcement cabin and a mother-and-baby room, addressing long-standing shortcomings.
  • Immediate measures include reopening toilets and plans, with Swachh Bharat Mission support, to build a new accessible toilet block at a cost of Rs 40 lakh.
