The Bareilly Development Authority (BDA) has initiated work to widen the Pilibhit Bypass, expanding the road to six lanes along an 11.3-kilometre stretch between Satellite Chowraha and Trishul Tiraha. Officials said the decision follows directions from the divisional commissioner and aims to address growing traffic pressures in the region.

Pilibhit Bypass widening to six lanes

At a meeting on Thursday, BDA officials met representatives from the forest department, municipal corporation, public works department (PWD) and the electricity department to finalise preparatory steps. Dr Manikandan A., vice-chair of the BDA, said the PWD and the electricity department have already completed surveys for the corridor, which has an approximate right of way of 200 feet (61 metres).

“The stretch will be expanded to six lanes keeping future traffic growth in mind,” Dr Manikandan said, adding that the project follows instructions from Divisional Commissioner Bhupendra S. Chaudhary. He said work on the Pilibhit Bypass has already begun and that the segment from Satellite Chowraha to Trishul Tiraha will commence shortly.

Authorities expect the six-lane upgrade to ease chronic congestion on the bypass and make travel smoother for commuters and commercial vehicles alike. The enhanced roadway is also likely to improve safety by separating traffic flows and providing additional lanes for overtaking and manoeuvring.

Stakeholders at the meeting discussed coordination between departments to ensure clearances and utility relocations proceed without delay. The presence of the forest department and municipal officials indicates that environmental approvals and local civic requirements are being addressed as part of the project’s preparatory phase.

Beyond immediate traffic relief, the BDA emphasised broader benefits. A wider arterial road can support economic activity by reducing transport times for goods and passengers, encouraging investment, and improving access to adjoining neighbourhoods. For a growing urban region, such upgrades are vital in managing congestion and supporting long-term urban planning.

Residents along the corridor should expect construction activity and some disruption as preparatory works and utility adjustments continue. BDA officials indicated they will coordinate with municipal authorities to manage traffic diversions and minimise inconvenience during peak hours.

While the announcement does not specify a completion date, the formal surveys and departmental coordination suggest a planned and phased implementation. The BDA has positioned the project as part of an ongoing effort to improve public infrastructure and commuter experience in Bareilly.

In summary, the Pilibhit Bypass widening represents a significant local infrastructure investment intended to relieve congestion, enhance road safety and bolster connectivity for residents and businesses in the region. As work progresses, officials have pledged continued coordination among departments to ensure the project advances smoothly and delivers the anticipated benefits.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bareilly Development Authority has begun work to widen the Pilibhit Bypass to six lanes along an 11.3 km stretch.
  • The project covers about 200 feet (61 metres) of right of way and follows surveys by PWD and the electricity department.
  • Pilibhit Bypass widening aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety and enhance regional connectivity.
