Dr Nitte Vinay Hegde, the founder of the Nitte Education Trust and current chancellor of Nitte deemed-to-be university in Mangalore, died on Thursday morning at the age of 86. A prominent educationist, entrepreneur and social worker in Karnataka, Dr Hegde played a central role in expanding higher education across the coastal region and fostering links between academia and industry.

Born into a family with a strong public service tradition, Dr Hegde was the son of the late Justice K. S. Hegde, a former Lok Sabha Speaker. Educated at St Aloysius College in Mangalore, he established the Nitte Education Trust in 1979 in accordance with his father’s wishes. Over the following decades the trust grew into a network of more than 40 institutions across Mangalore, Bengaluru and Nitte, offering courses in medicine, engineering, dentistry, pharmacy and management.

Nitte Vinay Hegde’s impact on education and industry

Under Dr Hegde’s stewardship, the Nitte group expanded from a single institution into a diversified educational and industrial presence. The institutions under the trust gained recognition for professional courses that addressed regional needs for healthcare professionals, engineers and managers. He served as the chancellor of Nitte deemed-to-be university in Mangalore and continued to guide its strategic direction.

Beyond education, Dr Hegde was the founding chairman of Lemina Suspension Private Limited and related Lemina group companies, which became an important player in automobile component manufacturing. His dual focus on education and local industry helped to create employment, augment local supply chains and support technical training that aligned with industrial demand.

Dr Hegde also played an active part in several state committees and industry associations, contributing to policy discussions and regional development initiatives. His involvement extended to social and cultural organisations, where he championed community services and charitable activities.

His contributions to education and public life were recognised by the Karnataka government with the Rajyotsava Award, and Mangalore University conferred upon him an honorary doctorate. Colleagues and community leaders have described him as a visionary for the coastal Karnataka region whose efforts accelerated both educational access and regional industrial capacity.

As institutions around the region respond to his passing, administrators have signalled a commitment to continue the programmes and partnerships he established. The Nitte Education Trust’s network of medical colleges, engineering colleges, dental colleges, pharmacy and management schools continue to serve thousands of students each year and remain central to the trust’s mission.

Dr Hegde’s death leaves a void in the coastal Karnataka leadership that linked scholastic ambition with practical industrial development. His legacy is visible in the graduates who now serve across India’s healthcare and engineering sectors and in the manufacturing ventures that provide employment and technical know-how to the region.

The family has yet to announce funeral arrangements. Tributes from peers in education, industry and public life are expected in the coming days as the community reflects on a life spent building institutions and opportunities for future generations.

Key Takeaways:

  • Nitte Vinay Hegde, founder of Nitte Education Trust, has died aged 86, leaving a legacy in coastal Karnataka education and industry.
  • He built a network of more than 40 institutions including medical, engineering and management colleges.
  • As chairman of Lemina group and university chancellor, he combined educational leadership with industrial entrepreneurship.
