President Droupadi Murmu extended warm greetings to the people of India on the eve of 2026, urging citizens to use the turning of the year as a moment for self-reflection and renewed commitment to the nation’s progress. In a message circulated from New Delhi, she called on Indians at home and abroad to strengthen their resolve towards development, social harmony and environmental protection.

“This is also an occasion for self-reflection and new commitments,” the President said. “On this occasion let us redouble our commitment to the country’s development, social harmony and the protection of the environment.” She expressed a personal wish that 2026 would bring peace, happiness and prosperity to people’s lives and provide fresh energy to make India stronger and more prosperous.

Droupadi Murmu New Year message: key themes

The Droupadi Murmu New Year message focused on three clear themes: national development, social cohesion and environmental stewardship. By linking these priorities, the President framed the New Year as an opportunity for collective action rather than merely a moment of celebration.

Her appeal to Indians overseas underscored the inclusive tone of the message, recognising the global Indian diaspora’s role in contributing to the country’s image and development. The President’s reference to environmental protection also reflected growing public concern about sustainable growth as India pursues rapid economic and infrastructural expansion.

Officials at the Rashtrapati Bhavan said the message was intended to inspire individual and civic responsibility as India enters 2026. While the presidency is largely a constitutional office, such public addresses play a symbolic role in articulating national priorities and encouraging unity across diverse communities.

Across the country, the arrival of the New Year was marked by widespread enthusiasm. Cities reported housefull parties at popular venues and a buoyant nightlife as people gathered to welcome 2026. Major tourist and religious sites witnessed large crowds, with many locations so full that it was difficult to find space to move. The festivities cut across age groups, with children showing particular excitement as families took part in celebrations.

Despite a spell of colder weather in several regions, the chill did little to dampen spirits. People celebrated with film songs, social gatherings and community events. Many families and friends chose quiet home observances while others attended organised festivities in public spaces. The nationwide scenes of celebration reflected an appetite for normalcy and enjoyment after challenging years for many households.

Journalists and commentators noted that the President’s words about social harmony came at a moment when public discourse often returns to questions of unity and civic responsibility. Calls for environmental protection were also timely, as India continues to balance industrial growth with commitments to cleaner air, water and sustainable practices.

As the country moves into 2026, the President’s message remains a succinct reminder of shared responsibilities: to pursue development that benefits all, to foster social cohesion and to protect the environment for future generations. For many Indians the New Year offered both celebration and a renewed sense of purpose.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Droupadi Murmu New Year message emphasised hopes for peace, happiness and renewed energy to build a stronger India in 2026.
  • Nationwide celebrations were widespread, with crowded tourist and religious sites and housefull parties in major cities despite cold weather.
