India Sees Two Maoists Killed in Bijapur as DRG Tightens Security in Chhattisgarh

Two suspected Maoists were killed in an encounter with the District Reserve Guard (DRG) in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Saturday, officials said. Security forces launched a search operation in the southern reaches of the district and the DRG team engaged with insurgents in intermittent gunfire from around 05:00, according to Bastar Range police.

Chhattisgarh Maoist encounter signals advance in regional security

Police officials recovered the bodies of two Maoists at the encounter site. Inspector General of Police for the Bastar Range, P. Sundarraj, confirmed the casualties and said the operation remains underway in the dense forest as forces continue to clear the area of any remaining insurgent presence. Further details about the identities of the deceased and any recovered material are awaited.

The incident follows a sustained campaign against Naxalite activity in the Bastar Range. Sundarraj said that decisive, intelligence-led operations and close coordination among security units have produced substantial results. “The year 2025 has been a historic and decisive year marked by significant achievements on the fronts of security, peace, service, justice, and development,” he said in an official release, highlighting the dismantling of top Maoist leadership, large-scale weapon recoveries and the surrender of senior cadres.

Authorities say the improved security environment has allowed for the expansion of basic infrastructure and the delivery of government welfare schemes to previously inaccessible areas. Roads, communications, healthcare and education projects have reached more remote communities across the Bastar Range, officials added, arguing these advances underpin lasting peace and development.

Security sources described the Bijapur operation as part of continued efforts to consolidate control over areas long affected by insurgency. The DRG, a force raised specifically to counter Naxalite violence, has been deployed in the south Bastar region where pockets of armed resistance have historically hampered administration and development work.

Local officials emphasised that clearing operations are followed by measures to stabilise liberated areas. These include erecting temporary camps, improved patrolling, and accelerated delivery of welfare programmes intended to address grievances that can fuel insurgency. Sources said rehabilitation of surrendered cadres and community engagement remain priorities alongside kinetic operations.

Humanitarian groups and civil society have called for transparency and the protection of civilians during security operations. Independent verification of casualties and recoveries is important to ensure adherence to law and to maintain public confidence, observers say.

As security forces continue their sweep of the encounter area, police appealed to the public to stay clear of the operation zone and to report any suspicious movement. Officials said they will release further information as investigations and searches conclude.

The Bijapur encounter is likely to be viewed within a broader narrative of stabilisation in Bastar, where authorities credit a mix of security pressure and development work for eroding extremist capability. For residents, the outcome of such operations may be judged by how quickly normal civic services are restored and whether long-term economic opportunities follow.

Key Takeaways:

  • Chhattisgarh Maoist encounter resulted in two bodies recovered after an exchange of fire between DRG and Maoist cadres.
  • The operation is ongoing in dense forest areas of Bijapur as security forces search to clear Maoist presence.
  • Authorities cite 2025 as a decisive year with dismantling of leadership, weapon recoveries and surrendered cadres that aided local development.
