India to Run First Vande Bharat Sleeper Between Delhi and Kolkata

The Indian Railways is preparing to introduce the first Vande Bharat Sleeper service on the Delhi–Kolkata corridor, with commercial operations expected to begin by the end of the month. The new train aims to combine the comfort of long-distance sleeper coaches with the higher speed and modern amenities associated with Vande Bharat sets, offering a significant boost to rail travel for passengers across four states.

Vande Bharat Sleeper will serve Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal

Railway sources say the service will run between New Delhi and Kolkata and is likely to call at major stations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, including Kanpur, Prayagraj and Patna, though the final stoppage list has not been confirmed. The train is expected to relieve pressure on an already busy route where demand consistently outstrips seat availability, leaving long waiting lists for conventional trains.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper has been designed for longer journeys and includes upgraded facilities aimed at improving passenger comfort on overnight runs. Interiors are configured to provide sleeper berths along with contemporary features that passengers have come to expect on Vande Bharat services.

High-speed trials demonstrate stability and readiness

In recent tests on the Kota–Nagda section, the train completed a final high-speed trial reaching 180 kilometres per hour while maintaining ride stability. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared video footage of the run, highlighting that water-filled glasses aboard the train remained level at top speed, a common demonstration of suspension and ride quality.

While the scheduled commercial speed on the Delhi–Kolkata route may be lower than the trial maximum, the tests underline the train’s capability for faster, safer travel and provide confidence ahead of passenger services.

Timing and wider implications

Officials indicate the launch could be timed for the third week of January when the train would be formally flagged off. Initial reports had suggested a December start, but the revised schedule appears to accommodate additional trials and operational preparations. Partly owing to the proximity of assembly elections in West Bengal, the service launch may also have a public-relations dimension, offering a tangible improvement in rail services for the region.

Beyond political considerations, the Vande Bharat Sleeper represents an incremental upgrade in India’s rail infrastructure. For regular travellers on the Delhi–Kolkata corridor, the service promises shorter journey times, improved onboard amenities and a more comfortable night-time travel experience. Given the heavy demand on this corridor, the new service is likely to attract a large number of bookings immediately after its introduction.

Railway authorities will announce the final timetable, fare structure and confirmed stoppages in the days leading up to the inauguration. Passengers and regular commuters are advised to monitor official Indian Railways releases and authorised ticketing platforms for booking windows and schedule updates.

Key Takeaways:

  • India will introduce the first Vande Bharat Sleeper on the Delhi–Kolkata route by the end of the month, benefiting passengers from four states.
  • Final high-speed trials reached 180 kilometres per hour, demonstrating ride stability and modern onboard facilities.
  • Planned stops are likely to include major stations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, easing long-distance travel and reducing waiting lists.
  • The launch is timed ahead of state elections in West Bengal and could be flagged off in January.
