Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan arrived in Tamil Nadu on 2 January for a two-day official visit during which he will participate in events in Chennai and Vellore. His arrival at Chennai Airport was marked by a Guard of Honour and a formal reception by Governor R. N. Ravi, Union Minister of State L. Murugan, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and other senior officials.

Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan visit Tamil Nadu schedule and significance

The visit follows Mr Radhakrishnan’s recent appearance as chief guest at the valedictory ceremony of Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 in Rameswaram on 30 December 2025. During that ceremony, the Vice-President emphasised the long-standing civilisational and spiritual connections between regions of India and commended efforts that promote exchange and shared heritage.

At Kashi Tamil Sangamam, the Vice-President quoted the poet Subramania Bharati and linked Bharati’s vision of a united and confident India with the government’s initiative of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. He said such cultural exchanges help advance national integration and contribute to the broader goal of Viksit Bharat under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Officials accompanying the Vice-President at the earlier event included Governor R. N. Ravi, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of State Dr L. Murugan, MP R. Dharmar and MLA Nainar Nagendran. Their presence reflected cross-party and institutional support for the initiative.

During his two-day itinerary in Tamil Nadu, Mr Radhakrishnan is expected to attend public and institutional events in Chennai and Vellore, meet local leaders, and address gatherings that focus on cultural and educational collaboration. The Guard of Honour at the airport signalled the official and ceremonial importance attached to the visit.

Analysts say such visits serve several purposes: they reinforce cultural diplomacy within India, provide a platform to promote national initiatives, and enable senior officeholders to engage directly with regional constituencies. By participating in programmes like Kashi Tamil Sangamam, national leaders aim to foster mutual respect and build connections across linguistic and cultural boundaries.

Local authorities welcomed the Vice-President’s visit as an opportunity to highlight Tamil Nadu’s role in national cultural projects. The events scheduled in Chennai and Vellore will give civic bodies and educational institutions the chance to showcase regional contributions to India’s cultural heritage.

As he continues his programme in the state, the Vice-President is likely to reiterate themes of unity through cultural exchange and the importance of shared heritage in nation building. Officials and organisers said they expect the visit to strengthen existing ties between central institutions and Tamil Nadu’s political and cultural establishments.

The visit also underlines the government’s focus on symbolic and substantive acts of cohesion ahead of coming national engagements. With a calendar of public events and institutional meetings set, the Vice-President’s presence in Chennai and Vellore will be watched by both local observers and national commentators for signals about future cultural and educational collaborations.
