The Indian Railways will introduce its first Vande Bharat sleeper train on the Guwahati–Kolkata route, officials confirmed, marking a significant step in modernising long‑distance rail travel to the country’s north‑eastern states. The new service will include air‑conditioned sleeper accommodation, with third AC fares set at ₹2,300.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the launch amid broader plans to expand high‑speed and upgraded services across India. During a public statement, he also reiterated that the much‑anticipated bullet train project is scheduled to begin service on 15 August next year.

Vande Bharat sleeper train service details and fares

The Vande Bharat sleeper train is a sleeper‑configuration variant of the Vande Bharat family, designed for overnight and long‑distance journeys while retaining modern amenities associated with the semi‑high speed fleet. The third AC berth fare for the Guwahati–Kolkata run has been fixed at ₹2,300. Officials have said the train will offer features aimed at improving passenger comfort for multi‑hour journeys, including enhanced sleeping berths, improved sanitation facilities and upgraded catering options.

Indian Railways has typically introduced Vande Bharat services on high‑demand routes; this sleeper variant is intended to serve passengers who require overnight travel and better rest facilities than conventional express services. Ticketing and reservation details are expected to be released via the national reservation system ahead of the inaugural run.

What the new service means for the region

Transport analysts say the service will strengthen connectivity between the eastern and north‑eastern regions, supporting commerce, tourism and daily travel. Faster, more comfortable rail links can reduce travel times and provide an alternative to air travel for price‑sensitive passengers, while also improving access to markets and services for businesses in Assam and neighbouring states.

The introduction of a sleeper Vande Bharat also signals an operational shift for Indian Railways, which has sought to diversify the Vande Bharat portfolio to include multiple configurations. The adaptation reflects demand for modern rolling stock that can serve both day and night journeys without compromising on passenger amenities.

Officials cautioned that precise schedules, frequency and journey times would be confirmed by the railway ministry and zonal authorities in the coming weeks. Local stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, noting potential benefits for tourism and for people travelling for education and healthcare between Kolkata and the north‑eastern states.

On the bullet train timeline, Mr Vaishnaw’s statement sets expectations for the first commercial runs to coincide with India’s Independence Day next year. Authorities will need to finalise regulatory clearances, testing windows and operational protocols before confirming an exact launch date.

As the railway ministry moves to operationalise the sleeper Vande Bharat, passengers and industry observers will be looking for clarity on schedules, coach composition and reservation rules. The new service positions Indian Railways to provide improved overnight travel options while continuing to expand its fleet of modern trains.

Key Takeaways:

  • India will run its first Vande Bharat sleeper train between Guwahati and Kolkata, improving connectivity to the northeast.
  • Third AC fare is set at ₹2,300 for the new sleeper service.
  • Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project will begin service on 15 August next year.
  • Officials say the sleeper variant aims to offer long‑distance comfort and modern onboard amenities for travellers.
