Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla appealed for a concerted and sustained effort to protect young people from drug abuse at the closing ceremony of the Shimla Winter Carnival on New Year’s Day. Speaking as the chief guest, the Governor urged every citizen to pledge not to consume drugs and to prevent others from falling into addiction.

Shimla Winter Carnival

The third edition of the Shimla Winter Carnival presented a vibrant mix of music, dance and traditional performances, attracting both local residents and tourists. Governor Shukla praised the festival for promoting the state’s cultural heritage and for providing a platform for local artists to showcase their talent.

Addressing the final cultural evening, the Governor extended New Year greetings and expressed hope that the coming year would bring prosperity and peace to the people of Himachal Pradesh. Lady Governor Janki Shukla was present at the event, along with senior state and municipal officials.

Shukla commended the Shimla Municipal Corporation and the organising committee for arranging a programme that combined entertainment with social awareness initiatives. He described the carnival as more than an event, saying it was a celebration of positive civic engagement and community responsibility that strengthens ties between residents and visitors from across India and abroad.

Environmental stewardship featured prominently in the Governor’s remarks. He said that festivities should proceed alongside efforts to protect nature and preserve cultural heritage. He called for cleanliness, the protection of greenery and balanced development to ensure that future generations can enjoy Shimla’s natural and cultural assets. He also urged organisers and tourists to maintain equilibrium between tourism, nature and tradition.

The evening included performances by comedian Ehsaan Qureshi and Bollywood singer Hema Sardesai. The Mayor of Shimla Municipal Corporation, Surendra Chauhan, felicitated the Governor and the First Lady. Shimla MLA Harish Janartha and senior district officials were among the dignitaries in attendance.

In a ceremony that highlighted local talent, the Governor presented awards to the winners of Voice of Shimla Season‑3. First prize winner Saurav Atri received Rs 51,000, while Poonam Pandit and Subhash took second and third prizes of Rs 31,000 and Rs 21,000 respectively. The Governor also released the carnival souvenir, marking the close of the three‑day celebration.

Organisers said the Shimla Winter Carnival has grown into a signature event for the state, drawing visitors who contribute to the local economy while enjoying cultural programmes. Officials noted that the festival’s combination of traditional and contemporary performances helps sustain local arts and provides income opportunities for performers and small businesses.

By linking cultural celebration with social messages and environmental responsibility, the Shimla Winter Carnival sought to project a model for community festivals that entertain while promoting public welfare. The Governor’s call for a united stand against drug abuse underlined the wider civic purpose behind the event.
