Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar has appealed to community leaders to refrain from communal statements, warning that careless rhetoric could threaten Kerala’s social fabric. His remarks came on Friday during a reception for the Kerala Yatra held at the Collectorate ground in Kannur, an event organised under the leadership of the Kerala Muslim Jamaat.
Protecting Kerala communal harmony
Speaking to a gathered audience, Kanthapuram said Kerala’s people place a high value on democracy and fraternity, and urged political and social figures to reject any attempt to divide communities by undermining religious harmony. He said such moves were unacceptable in a democratic society and called for greater caution in both words and actions, particularly from those who hold positions of influence and respect.
“A single careless expression should not create cracks in society,” he said, highlighting the fragile consequences that inflammatory language can have in a plural state like Kerala. He added that true human progress depended on both material and spiritual growth, a point he used to encourage leaders to model restraint and responsibility.
The Kerala Yatra reached Kannur on its second day and was welcomed at Payyannur by district Sunni leaders. The yatra is visiting towns and districts across the state to engage with communities and build support for the Kerala Muslim Jamaat’s programme of outreach.
Organisers have scheduled a series of receptions and public meetings as the yatra moves through the state. The itinerary includes Nadapuram on 3 January, Kozhikode Muthalakkulam on 4 January, Kalpetta on 5 January and Gudalur on 6 January. Further stops are planned at Areekode, Tirur, Ottappalam and Chavakkad, with events in Ernakulam, Thodupuzha and Kottayam later in the programme.
On 14 January the yatra will hold two receptions at Pathanamthitta (10 a.m.) and Kayamkulam (5 p.m.). The procession will continue through Kollam on 15 January before concluding at Putharikandam Maidan in Thiruvananthapuram at 5 p.m. on 16 January.
Kanthapuram’s message came amid wider concerns about communal tensions in parts of India, and his call for restraint echoes appeals from civil society groups and political leaders for calm and dialogue. By urging leaders to avoid incendiary remarks, he stressed a preventative approach to safeguarding social cohesion and reducing the risk of conflict.
At the reception in Kannur, district Sunni leaders and local residents reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful engagement. The yatra’s organisers said the tour aimed to foster community interaction and address local issues through discussion rather than confrontation.
As the Kerala Yatra moves through the state in the coming days, organisers and community figures alike will be closely watched for the tone and content of their public statements. For now, Kanthapuram’s appeal is a reminder of the responsibility that leaders have to preserve communal harmony and protect the democratic values that many in Kerala cherish.
