Former Odisha chief minister and Biju Janata Dal president Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday extended warm New Year wishes to the people of Odisha, calling for happiness, peace and prosperity in 2026 under the grace of Lord Jagannath. The brief message, circulated widely on social media, combined a personal invocation with a public-facing reminder of his role in the state’s political life.

Naveen Patnaik New Year greetings resonate across Odisha

In a short video, Mr Patnaik appears in his customary white kurta and begins with the traditional greeting, Jai Jagannath, before offering his wishes. “My greetings and best wishes to all on the occasion of the New Year. By the immense grace of Lord Jagannath, may the New Year bring happiness, peace and prosperity to everyone’s life,” he says in the clip.

The message is notable for its simplicity and cultural tone. By invoking Lord Jagannath, Mr Patnaik tapped into a shared religious and cultural sentiment that binds a large part of Odisha’s population. That resonance matters not only for spiritual reasons but also because such gestures help maintain a visible connection between a prominent public figure and the communities he represents.

Although Mr Patnaik no longer holds the chief minister’s office, his role as BJD president and leader of the opposition in the state means his statements continue to attract attention. Political observers say short, targeted messages like this serve a dual purpose: they provide reassurance to supporters during significant moments and keep a political profile active in the public domain.

New Year messages from political figures are a familiar feature of India’s public life, and this year was no different. Across towns and cities in Odisha, residents marked the turn of the year with family gatherings, temple visits and community prayers. The timing of Mr Patnaik’s message, released as celebrations peaked, ensured it reached a wide audience at a moment when people were reflecting on the year past and looking ahead.

The invocation of Lord Jagannath also highlights the continuing importance of regional cultural identity in Indian politics. Public leaders frequently draw on local traditions and religious observances to communicate empathy and shared values. For many in Odisha, Jagannath is more than a religious figure; he is a symbol of cultural heritage and social unity. By appealing to that sentiment, Mr Patnaik reinforced a collective wish for well-being in the year ahead.

Reactions to the video were largely measured and supportive on social platforms, with followers and residents acknowledging the greeting and echoing hopes for peace and prosperity. Commentators noted that while the message was short, it carried the hallmarks of Mr Patnaik’s public style: understated, culturally rooted and composed.

As Odias welcomed 2026, the message from their former chief minister served as a reminder of continuity in public life. Whether viewed purely as a seasonal greeting or as part of ongoing political communication, the video reinforced Mr Patnaik’s presence in the state’s public conversation. Jai Jagannath, he said, and many across Odisha joined in that sentiment as they began the new year.

Key Takeaways:

  • Naveen Patnaik shared a short video message offering New Year wishes and invoking Lord Jagannath’s blessings.
  • The message reinforces Patnaik’s cultural ties and continued presence in public discourse as opposition leader.
  • Odias across the state welcomed 2026 with hope, echoing Patnaik’s prayers for peace and prosperity.
