The District Magistrate of Patna has ordered a comprehensive programme to upgrade facilities and beautify the Patna Collectorate as the new year begins. Officials met on Friday to set targets, appoint nodal officers and begin preparations for landscaping, cultural displays and administrative modernisation at the historic complex.

Patna Collectorate beautification to combine heritage and modern facilities

Describing the collectorate as a national-level example of architectural heritage, the District Magistrate directed the district forest officer and district horticulture officer to prepare detailed proposals for gardening and beautification across the collectorate precinct. The aim is to enhance public access while preserving the site’s historic features.

To ensure focused implementation, eight specialised cells have been constituted. These cover gardening and beautification, library development, arts and culture, LED display installation, e-office development, a Jeevika souvenir centre, creative development and selection of best-performing staff. The sub-collector for special programmes will act as the senior nodal officer for gardening, while the district surveillance sub-collector and district horticulture officer will serve as nodal officers for execution.

Officials were assigned clear responsibilities at the review meeting chaired by the District Magistrate, which included the additional development commissioner, deputy district prosecutors and heads of various branches. The collectorate currently houses around 39 departments and functions as a one-stop solution for many citizen services. As part of the modernisation drive, departments will be converted to e-office in a phased manner to improve transparency and accountability.

The District Magistrate emphasised that upgrades will not be limited to physical improvements. The district public grievance officer has been asked to prepare proposals for the library’s development while the district arts and culture officer will arrange programmes and displays that reflect Patna’s cultural heritage. Officials also plan to showcase products created by women supported under the Jeevika livelihood programme, providing a platform for local artisans and entrepreneurs.

LED displays and improved signage are expected to make information more accessible for visitors. The e-office initiative aims to streamline administrative procedures, reduce paperwork and speed up public service delivery. The District Magistrate announced that monthly awards will recognise the best-performing employees, with the intention of encouraging higher standards across departments.

Appointments to the various cells are complete, with the additional development commissioner named as the senior official overseeing all areas. Each cell will have a designated senior and nodal officer, and their duties have been defined to ensure accountability and timely execution. The approach blends heritage preservation with practical upgrades so visitors and staff can benefit from an improved environment and modern facilities.

By pairing conservation with contemporary services, authorities hope the Patna Collectorate will offer visitors a richer experience of the district’s architectural history while functioning efficiently as a centre of public administration. The programme reflects a wider local commitment to enhancing public spaces and supporting livelihoods alongside administrative reform.

Key Takeaways:

  • District authorities in Patna have ordered proposals for Patna Collectorate beautification, including landscaping and cultural displays.
  • Eight specialised units have been formed to oversee garden works, library development, LED displays, e-office rollout and livelihood product promotion.
  • Officials named nodal officers and set responsibilities to modernise the collectorate while preserving its historic architecture.
  • Plans include phased e-office adoption, monthly performance awards and public-facing amenities to create a one-stop solution for citizens.
