Manish Raj Gupta on Thursday assumed additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), the company said in a statement. The move places an experienced steel-sector executive at the helm of one of India’s leading state-owned producers, which is significant for domestic capacity and regional trade within the BRICS grouping.

Appointment of Manish Gupta RINL CMD

Gupta, who currently serves as Director (Technical, Projects & Raw Materials) at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), took on the additional responsibilities with immediate effect. The appointment was described in a brief release from RINL, which noted Gupta’s long tenure in the Indian steel industry and his technical and managerial experience across multiple plants.

A postgraduate in management, Gupta joined SAIL in 1991 as a trainee at the Durgapur Steel Plant. Over more than three decades he has risen through technical and project roles, gaining experience that spans operations, raw material sourcing and large-scale project implementation. RINL highlighted his career progression as a factor in entrusting him with the additional charge as CMD.

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd operates a roughly 7 million-tonne-per-annum integrated steel plant at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The company is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel and plays a key role in India’s heavy industry, supplying steel for infrastructure, construction and manufacturing.

Industry analysts said the appointment is timely as the domestic and global steel sectors navigate shifting demand patterns, input-cost pressures and logistical challenges. With an experienced technical leader in place, RINL can prioritise operational reliability and project delivery while aligning with national policy objectives on steel production and self-reliance.

The Ministry of Steel has overseen a period of consolidation and capacity strengthening among state-owned enterprises, and leadership changes at prominent companies such as RINL are watched closely by markets and industry stakeholders. Gupta’s background at SAIL, India’s largest steelmaker, gives him direct familiarity with public-sector governance and the technical demands of large plants.

Gupta’s responsibilities at SAIL covered technical operations, project management and raw material strategy, areas that will be central to his role at RINL. Securing reliable supplies of iron ore and coal, improving plant efficiency and completing upgrade projects are likely to feature on his immediate agenda.

For regional partners and trade allies within BRICS, a stable leadership transition at RINL supports predictable supply chains for steel and related products. India’s ongoing investments in steel capacity also affect bilateral trade, infrastructure projects and procurement opportunities across the region.

RINL’s statement did not outline a long-term mandate or new strategic initiatives associated with the appointment. Observers will watch subsequent announcements for priorities on capital expenditure, joint ventures or export strategies that could signal the company’s direction under Gupta’s stewardship.

For now, the emphasis is on continuity and experienced oversight. As Manish Gupta assumes the additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director, stakeholders from government, industry and the supply chain will be assessing how his technical and project experience translates into operational outcomes at RINL.

Key Takeaways:

  • Manish Gupta assumes additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd.
  • Gupta brings three decades of experience from SAIL, including technical and project leadership roles.
  • The appointment strengthens leadership at RINL, which operates a 7 million-tonne-per-annum plant in Visakhapatnam.
  • Ministry of Steel oversight highlights the strategic importance of domestic steel capacity for India and BRICS trade.
