The South India Philatelists’ Association has opened its platinum jubilee exhibition, SIPA @70, at the Dharmaprakash wedding hall in Purasawalkam. The three-day event runs until 4 January and is open to the public from 10:00 to 18:00 daily.
SIPA stamp exhibition India draws diverse collectors
The exhibition features nearly 130 frames of material, with contributions from 70 philatelists ranging from seasoned collectors to school students. Organisers said the breadth of exhibits covers traditional topics such as postal history and definitive issues, as well as thematic displays that explore subjects from art and nature to transport.
Mahesh Parekh, secretary of SIPA, noted that the show aims to celebrate seven decades of the association while encouraging new interest in stamp collecting. “We have a strong mix of experienced exhibitors and young collectors. The student participation demonstrates how philately still offers educational value and a pathway to learning about history, geography and culture,” he said.
Visitors can also meet dealers and buy stamps at the venue. Fourteen dealer stalls are present alongside a stall operated by India Post, providing access to current issues and postal products. The marketplace element helps to keep collecting active by giving enthusiasts opportunities to acquire hard-to-find items and to trade duplicates.
Exhibitions such as SIPA @70 serve several functions in the hobby. They provide a forum for judging and displaying collections, they help to preserve postal heritage, and they foster community among collectors. Shows often include informal talks, guidance for new collectors and displays designed specifically for younger audiences to spark interest.
Members of the public are welcome to attend free of charge and are encouraged to bring family members. The accessible timing and central location in Purasawalkam aim to attract both casual visitors and committed philatelists from across the city and neighbouring districts.
Organisers have also emphasised the educational aspect of the exhibition. Many student exhibits highlight how stamps can be used as primary sources for classroom projects on history, biodiversity and global affairs. SIPA has regularly run outreach activities and this jubilee exhibition includes special frames that showcase youth contributions.
For collectors, exhibitions are an opportunity to have collections evaluated by experienced judges and to receive feedback that can improve their presentation and research. For new audiences, the visual appeal of well-presented frames and the variety of themes can make stamp collecting easier to understand and enjoy.
SIPA plans to continue its programmes after the jubilee, with regular meetings, workshops and smaller displays through the year. The association hopes the high-profile show will boost membership and encourage more young people to take up philately as a hobby and a scholarly pursuit.
The exhibition is open until 4 January from 10:00 to 18:00 at Dharmaprakash wedding hall, Purasawalkam. Visitors seeking further information can contact SIPA through their local listings or visit India Post outlets for details on new issues.
