Vande Bharat sleeper train at New Delhi station

India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train arrived at New Delhi railway station on Saturday, where Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inspected the new rake and outlined its features. Built to offer improved comfort and convenience for overnight travellers, the 16-coach train combines enhanced safety systems with passenger-focused amenities.

Vande Bharat sleeper offers upgraded comfort and convenience

The train has been engineered with revised suspension and braking systems designed to minimise jolts and ensure a smoother ride. Every coach and the driver’s cabin follow an updated ergonomic design. Minister Vaishnaw said the entire rake is fitted with CCTV cameras to boost onboard security and that steps and berths have been redesigned and tested for passengers of different body types and ages.

The sleeper variant will initially operate between Guwahati and Kolkata, departing late in the evening and completing the journey the following morning. Two services will run on this route to begin with. The minister added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon inaugurate the service officially. Indian Railways plans to manufacture ten additional Vande Bharat sleeper trains this year, which will be deployed across five different routes as the network expands.

Onboard amenities target passenger needs

Each seat in the Vande Bharat sleeper has its own reading light and a dedicated charging point, a notable change from earlier arrangements where sockets were shared. Passengers will find a small shelf or holder for mobile devices beside each berth. The train also carries an integrated RO water system; travellers can refill bottles at taps in the coaches, with both cold and hot water available free of charge.

Catering provisions include seven pantry cars distributed across the 16-coach formation, ensuring access to meals and refreshments during the journey. For crew, separate seating has been provided, reflecting an emphasis on operational practicality as well as passenger comfort.

Design features for privacy, cleanliness and safety

First AC compartments include a privacy feature that allows passengers to view someone at the door without opening it. A small section of glass on the door can be switched from opaque to clear by pressing a button, enabling visual checks before opening. Waste management has been improved with onboard garbage compactors; passengers use a button-operated lid to deposit rubbish, which is then compressed automatically to save space and keep the coaches tidy.

Vaishnaw emphasised that the Vande Bharat programme is part of a wider effort to upgrade track, signalling, stations, platforms and overhead equipment. More than 180 Vande Bharat trains are already in service across India, and the introduction of sleeper variants is intended to broaden the appeal of semi-high-speed trains for longer overnight routes.

Railway officials say the sleeper design aims to combine the speed and modern features of Vande Bharat rakes with the practicality required for overnight travel, offering an upgraded alternative to conventional express sleepers. As more units enter service this year, passengers can expect improved travel times and a higher standard of onboard amenities on selected inter-city routes.

Key Takeaways:

  • Vande Bharat sleeper launches with modern amenities including charging at every seat and free RO water.
  • Train features 16 coaches, improved suspension, CCTV security and seven pantries for onboard catering.
  • Initial service will run between Guwahati and Kolkata; 10 more sleeper units planned this year across five routes.
  • Indian Railways says the design focuses on comfort, safety and operational improvements.
