Traffic on the Mohamed Bin Zayed (MBZ) elevated toll road surged sharply on the day before New Year 2026, underscoring the heavy movement of people leaving Jakarta for year-end holidays.
PT Jasamarga Jalanlayang Cikampek (PT JJC), which operates the MBZ flyover, recorded a total two-way volume of 56,962 vehicles on 31 December 2025, a 31.47% increase compared with a normal day when 43,349 vehicles typically pass the route. The data show that outbound traffic—vehicles leaving Jakarta—was particularly dominant.
MBZ flyover traffic peaks as motorists depart Jakarta
According to PT JJC, 30,613 vehicles left Jakarta via the MBZ flyover that day, a 42.68% rise from the normal outbound count of 21,456. The most significant spike occurred during daytime hours, when outbound flow rose 62.30% versus usual levels. Inbound traffic towards Jakarta also climbed, reaching 26,349 vehicles, up 20.35% from a typical 21,893 vehicles.
The operator said morning and daytime periods accounted for much of the increase into the capital, with the strongest inward surge recorded at 40.92% during midday. Conversely, evening volumes heading into Jakarta fell by 19.11% compared with normal conditions, suggesting many travellers had already reached their destinations by late afternoon.
“Overall, total two-way vehicle volume on the MBZ elevated section on 31 December 2025 reached 56,962 vehicles, an increase of 31.47% compared with normal traffic of 43,349 vehicles,” said Desti Anggraeni, GM Operations and Maintenance at PT Jasamarga Jalanlayang Cikampek, in a statement quoted on 1 January 2026.
Traffic authorities and the toll operator said the figures reflect the strong mobility associated with the year-end holiday peak. The dominant outbound flow suggests that a large number of residents chose to leave the city in the final hours of 2025, amplifying daytime traffic loads on the MBZ flyover.
Transport planners typically monitor such spikes to allocate resources, adjust traffic control measures and advise motorists on travel times to reduce congestion. The contrasting patterns—sharp daytime increases and reduced evening inbound volumes—offer signals for targeted traffic management during future holiday peaks.
While the MBZ elevated toll remains a key arterial route for those departing Jakarta, authorities continue to coordinate with regional police and toll operators to manage peak flows, ensure safety and maintain mobility. Commuters are advised to check official traffic updates when planning travel during major holiday periods.
The rise in MBZ flyover traffic on the eve of New Year 2026 highlights the enduring demand on Jakarta’s road network during festive travel and the importance of operational readiness by toll operators and traffic management agencies.
