The Chairman of Itire-Ikate Local Council Development Area, Daniel Odunayo, used his 100th day in office to unveil a series of community-focused projects, saying the administration will continue to prioritise infrastructure, education and local economic growth.
Itire-Ikate 100 days
On the milestone day, Mr Odunayo inaugurated seven roads, one in each ward, and handed over three buses to key local institutions including the Council Legislators, the Office of the Chairman and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE). He said the interventions aim to improve mobility, boost commerce and open up communities for greater economic activity.
“Today, we open seven strategic roads, one in each ward, to boost our economy and improve accessibility,” Odunayo said. “This is just the beginning of our infrastructure revolution. We also believe in investing in our future — our children. That is why we are distributing free exercise books and school bags to our students. Education is key, and we are committed to supporting our young minds.”
The chairman outlined a programme of further works, which includes construction of additional primary schools, expanded local markets, new housing units and sporting facilities. A 45-member task force will be inaugurated to enforce cleanliness and improve sanitation across the council area.
Education and youth development featured prominently in the day’s events. Odunayo reported distribution of General Certificate of Education (GCE) forms and learning materials to pupils, alongside ongoing youth empowerment and skills-acquisition initiatives designed to increase employability and support small business creation.
Commenting on the administration’s early achievements, Lagos State chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, commended the council for its focus on residents’ welfare. He said plans are underway to deepen public accountability through regular engagements where officials will showcase achievements and face public questioning followed by independent performance assessments.
Ojelabi noted that the combination of increased local government autonomy and an expected tax reform beginning in January should boost council revenues, enabling further developmental projects. He urged council officials to maintain high standards, warning that underperformance will be reported to the Local Government Commission for appropriate action.
Local leaders and union representatives present at the inauguration welcomed the new infrastructure and the buses, saying the measures would ease transportation challenges and support public servants engaged in service delivery. Community members also praised the emphasis on education and cleanliness.
Analysts say the timing of the announcements is significant. With local government autonomy and revenue reforms on the horizon, councils that demonstrate the capacity to manage resources effectively are likely to attract more funding and support. For Itire-Ikate, the first 100 days set a tone of pragmatic, visible interventions aimed at everyday needs.
Mr Odunayo said the projects are part of a broader plan to deliver sustainable improvements over his tenure. He pledged continued engagement with residents and stakeholders to ensure that forthcoming projects reflect local priorities and deliver measurable benefits.
