Nine candidates were declared elected unopposed in the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal contest, underscoring the strength of local party organisation and alliances ahead of polling on 15 January. Of the uncontested winners, five represent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and four are from the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde.
Kalyan-Dombivli municipal elections and local dynamics
The municipal corporation has 122 wards in total. The wave of unopposed returns began when three BJP women candidates were declared elected without contest. On the following day two more BJP women and four candidates from the Shinde faction were also returned unopposed. That brings the tally of uncontested BJP corporators to five and Shinde’s Shiv Sena to four, signalling a competitive effort by both partners to secure uncontested wins.
Names among those declared elected unopposed include Rekha Chaudhary (Ward 18, Kachore), Asawari Kedar Navare (Ward 26A), Ranjana Penkar (Ward 26B) and Jyoti Pawan Patil (Ward 24B). Manda Subhash Patil, who recently joined the BJP from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena after a dispute with local MNS leaders, was also returned without opposition from Ward 27A in Dombivli East.
The Shinde faction’s unopposed victors feature senior former corporator Vishwanath Rane, Ramesh Sukarya Mhatre, Vrushali Ranjit Joshi and Harshal Rajesh More. Harshal More, the grandson of Kalyan Rural MLA Rajesh More, was elected unopposed from Ward 28 in Dombivli East.
Local leaders exerting influence include state BJP organiser Ravindra Chavan and Dr Shrikant Shinde, MP and son of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Although the two parties have contested municipal polls in alliance, the number of unopposed returns suggests an internal competition to present strong, uncontested candidates in certain wards.
Across Thane district, election officials reported that of 1,099 nomination papers submitted, 974 were accepted and 125 were rejected after scrutiny. The rejections and withdrawals helped create the handful of uncontested victories now recorded.
Beyond Kalyan-Dombivli, the BJP also secured an uncontested seat in neighbouring Bhiwandi where Sumit Patil, grandson of former union minister and senior BJP leader Kapil Patil, was returned unopposed from Ward 17B. The party headquarters and state leaders, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, extended congratulations by phone.
Observers say unopposed returns reflect both organisational reach and strategic candidate placement. In some cases the absence of opponents follows negotiated arrangements between local parties or the inability of rivals to complete valid nomination paperwork. Candidate moves between parties, such as Manda Patil’s switch from MNS to BJP, also influenced local alignments and may have reduced contestation in particular wards.
With polling set for 15 January, attention will shift to the remaining contested seats across the corporation. Election results in Kalyan-Dombivli will be watched closely as an indicator of how state-level alliances and local leadership influence municipal outcomes in the run-up to broader political battles in Maharashtra.
