The Kano State Government has approved more than ₦6.9 billion for a range of infrastructure, social welfare and governance initiatives across the state, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said after the 36th meeting of the Executive Council at Government House, Kano.
Kano State infrastructure funding to target roads, drainage and schools
The funding package is aimed at closing infrastructure gaps while strengthening state institutions. A large share of the approvals is earmarked for road projects, compensation for affected communities and measures to reduce flooding.
Key allocations include ₦2.6 billion for the construction of the Yandodo–Mai-Allo Road, a major route expected to improve connectivity between several communities, and ₦859.2 million in compensation to property owners impacted by a five-kilometre road project in Tudun Wada Local Government Area. The compensation, the commissioner said, is intended to ensure fairness and minimise disruption to local residents.
Flood mitigation works also received substantial funding. The council approved ₦1.2 billion for the construction of a box culvert and ₦896 million for the reconstruction of a failed culvert in Kiru Local Government Area, which has been susceptible to flooding. Urban drainage improvements were supported with ₦358.5 million for stormwater drainage projects in Kano Municipal, while ₦85.6 million was approved for the extension of water pipelines in Gwale Local Government Area.
Education and human capital development are among the priorities. The Executive Council authorised ₦285 million for classroom construction across the state and approved ₦431.7 million to support graduation ceremonies and empowerment programmes at the Kano State Entrepreneurship Institute. “Investment in education and entrepreneurship remains central to our human capital development strategy,” Waiya said.
Governance and accountability measures were also included. The council approved ₦157.7 million for the organisation of an anti-corruption workshop aimed at strengthening transparency in public service. Beyond spending approvals, the Executive Council authorised the transmission of four bills to the Kano State House of Assembly: the Kano State Local Governments Administration Bill 2025, the Kano State Economic Planning and Development Council Bill 2025, the Kano State Education Bill 2025, and a bill to rename the Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Dambatta.
To attract private investment and improve service delivery, the council approved the implementation of the state’s Public‑Private Partnership (PPP) Policy and Manual. The move signals the administration’s intent to collaborate with the private sector to accelerate development and leverage additional financing for public projects.
These latest approvals build on earlier commitments by the state government. In a previous briefing, the Executive Council approved ₦14.8 billion for projects including the renovation of the Sabo Bakin Zuwo maternity hospital in Jakara, investments in health facilities, solar energy systems and water infrastructure.
Taken together, the package is intended to boost connectivity, reduce flood risk, expand access to potable water and support education and entrepreneurship. The combined focus on infrastructure and institutional reform aims to create a platform for sustained development in Kano State while inviting private sector participation under the newly authorised PPP framework.
