Kano State Signs N1.477 Trillion 2026 Budget Into Law

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has signed the amended 2026 Appropriation Bill into law, approving a N1.477 trillion budget that places a strong emphasis on infrastructure and public services. The signing followed close scrutiny by the Kano State House of Assembly and comes after the administration reported robust execution of its 2025 budget.

Kano State 2026 budget

The amended budget, raised from an initial N1.3 trillion proposal to N1.477 trillion, allocates 71 per cent to capital expenditure and 29 per cent to recurrent spending. Governor Yusuf said the distribution reflects the administration’s priority to accelerate roadworks, renovate health facilities and expand educational infrastructure across the state.

“This budget captures critical infrastructural development needs and we are fully prepared to implement it in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” the governor said after assenting to the bill. He urged his cabinet to strengthen their support for the government’s development agenda and to ensure that allocated funds are used judiciously.

Officials pointed to last year’s outturn as a reason for cautious optimism. The governor said the 2025 budget achieved more than 80 per cent performance, citing progress in capital project execution and targeted interventions in the education and health sectors. That performance record, he added, provides a foundation for ambitious delivery in 2026.

Speaker Ismail Falgore of the Kano State House of Assembly explained that lawmakers engaged extensively with ministries, departments and agencies, along with other stakeholders, before approving the amended figure. He said the upward revision followed careful consideration of project needs and revenue expectations.

Falgore described the budget as geared towards enhancing socio-economic development and improving the welfare of residents if implementation is effective. He also noted the significant tilt towards capital projects, a move intended to spur job creation and stimulate local economic activity.

Beyond the fiscal numbers, Governor Yusuf announced plans to immortalise two members of the House of Assembly who died in the line of duty, calling their deaths a painful loss to the state. The administration intends to honour their service as part of wider efforts to maintain institutional memory and respect for public servants.

Fiscal discipline will be central to the government’s strategy. Yusuf pledged that all appropriated funds would be judiciously utilised and that beneficiaries across the state would begin to feel the impact of government programmes and policies. He urged transparency and accountability mechanisms to be strengthened to track project delivery.

Analysts say the heavy capital weighting in the Kano State 2026 budget signals an intent to jump‑start infrastructure-led growth at the subnational level. If projects proceed on schedule, the programme could boost local employment and improve access to basic services for millions of residents.

The passage and assent of the N1.477 trillion budget close a key chapter in Kano’s fiscal year planning and set the stage for implementation. Government ministries and agencies now face the task of translating allocations into visible improvements on the ground while maintaining fiscal prudence.
