Kazakhstan Greets New Year With Contrasting Weather

Across Kazakhstan, New Year’s Eve brought a striking mix of conditions that left residents experiencing very different festive moods. While people in Almaty sipped coffee on outdoor terraces in mild weather, communities in the north hurried between shops and shelters from bitter cold and snow. Local news outlet Tengri Life compiled reports and images from regions around the country on 31 December.

New Year weather in Kazakhstan

Almaty recorded an unusually mild temperature of around 8°C, allowing many residents to wear autumn jackets rather than heavy winter coats. Restaurant terraces were in use, and social posts contrasted the city’s spring-like atmosphere with scenes from colder parts of the country. One Almaty resident noted that while people in Astana were preparing ice cleats, Almaty locals were relaxed enough to enjoy coffee outside.

By contrast, the capital, Astana, saw temperatures near −6°C and fresh snowfall. The city’s administration reported that despite the cold, citizens turned out for public celebrations in well-wrapped clothing. Festive concerts took place across different districts and performers entertained families alongside traditional New Year characters Ayaz Ata and Akshakar. Children took part in games and competitions on decorated stages.

On the Caspian coast, images showed mild, spring-like scenes despite warm clothing. In Taldykorgan the thermometer read about −3°C with overcast skies, which discouraged outdoor seating at restaurants. Kyzylorda enjoyed recent snowfall, leaving soft, fresh snow that residents said lifted the seasonal mood.

Pavlodar and other eastern cities presented a firmer winter picture. Pavlodar registered around −6°C with residents photographed selling the last Christmas trees of the year and commuters waiting for buses after the final working day. Petropavlovsk recorded the coldest readings, about −14°C, where shoppers moved quickly between stores to keep warm.

Semey saw temperatures close to 0°C but steady winds that made hats and warm layers essential for anyone heading outdoors. Across all regions, local authorities and event organisers aimed to keep public festivities running while advising citizens to dress for the conditions.

The nationwide contrast in conditions illustrates the geographic diversity of Kazakhstan’s climate at the turn of the year. Mild scenes in the south and inland lows in the north created a patchwork of New Year experiences, from relaxed outdoor cafes to traditional snowy celebrations. Local media emphasised community spirit and resilience, with people adapting plans to stay comfortable and enjoy the holiday.

Photographs and eyewitness accounts published by Tengrinews captured the range of moods and temperatures: Almaty’s open-air diners, Astana’s snow-lined streets and stages, Kyzylorda’s fresh snow and Petropavlovsk’s deep freeze. Officials in several cities continued to promote festive programming and public safety measures for residents attending events over the holiday period.

Key Takeaways:

  • New Year weather in Kazakhstan varies sharply across regions, from mild +8°C in Almaty to −14°C in Petropavlovsk.
  • Residents in Almaty enjoy outdoor terraces while northern cities bundle up and hold festive events despite snow.
  • Astana hosted concerts and family programmes even as the capital recorded subzero temperatures.
  • Local reports highlight recent snowfall in Kyzylorda and windy conditions in Semey affecting outdoor plans.
