Parappanangadi, Kerala — As the new year dawned, a wedding in Parappanangadi turned into a small but meaningful celebration for environmental stewardship when the newly married couple received thousands of saplings as gifts. Groom Nihad and bride Rifa were presented with a total of 2026 saplings, symbolically linking their marriage to a commitment to planting and local cultivation.

Kerala sapling wedding ushers in new year

The saplings were donated by prominent local cultivator and State Farmer Friend award-winner Abdu Rasaq Mullappattu, who gifted the couple 2026 saplings from his nurseries. Additional saplings of a Vietnamese variety were also distributed to wedding guests, reflecting a desire to promote quick-yield and diverse planting across household plots in the area.

The couple, Nihad — son of Mullappattu — and Rifa, daughter of P.C. Abubacker from Thirur Ezhur, received the saplings during a ceremony held on New Year’s Eve. Mohammad Riyas, NABARD district development manager, performed the inaugural planting and handed over the first sapling, marking the start of what organisers described as a community-focused distribution drive.

Local residents at the ceremony welcomed the initiative as a practical and symbolic gesture. The distribution included varieties suited to local conditions as well as faster-growing Vietnamese stock intended to provide quicker yields for families seeking additional produce or income. Organisers said the aim is to encourage small-scale cultivation, improve household nutrition and support local livelihoods.

Mullappattu’s herb garden in Parappanangadi, which houses thousands of medicinal plants, has already won recognition from both the Kerala and Gujarat state governments. The garden served as the foundation for the sapling drive, with Mullappattu and his team preparing the seedlings for distribution to households and neighbours.

Commenting on the initiative, NABARD’s Riyas said the distribution aligned with broader rural development goals. “Small-scale planting and home gardens can bolster food security and generate supplementary income for households. When community celebrations incorporate such gestures, the impact spreads beyond the ceremony,” he said.

Wedding guests responded positively to receiving saplings; many noted they would plant them in home compounds or small plots. Community leaders highlighted the dual value of the gift: it celebrates a personal milestone while promoting environmental care and sustainable livelihoods.

While modest in scale, the effort has drawn attention as an example of how local customs can be adapted to support sustainability. The combination of traditional wedding hospitality with a practical, green gift reflects growing interest in environmentally conscious choices at community level across Kerala.

Organisers plan to follow up with guidance for recipients on planting and caring for the saplings, drawing on Mullappattu’s expertise and the advisory support of local agricultural officials. The initiative may also serve as a model for other communities seeking to blend social occasions with practical contributions to local agriculture and green spaces.
