A KSRTC bus was driven into the Superintendent of Police (SP) office compound in Pathanamthitta on Tuesday evening after a heated argument among passengers threatened to escalate on board. The driver diverted the Thiruvananthapuram–Mundakayam service to the police compound to seek immediate intervention and prevent violence.
KSRTC bus dispute prompts police intervention
The bus, operating out of the Erumeli depot, reached the Pathanamthitta depot at about 3.30pm. A group who had boarded at Thiruvananthapuram requested extra time to use the restroom before the onward journey. Although the conductor initially agreed, several members of the group were delayed after leaving the bus for tea and the washroom.
Other passengers objected to the wait. Tensions rose when some returning group members attempted to reclaim seats that had been taken in their absence. The disagreement soon turned physical, with pushing and shoving reported inside the coach.
With the situation threatening to spiral, the driver elected to take the bus directly into the SP office compound at around 4pm. The move brought the vehicle to a secure, supervised area and allowed police officers and bus staff to intervene promptly. Officers reached the compound and, together with the conductor and other staff, issued stern warnings to those responsible for the disturbance.
Authorities reminded the passengers that any disruption could lead to fines, the obligation to pay for a disrupted trip, and possible legal proceedings. Faced with these consequences and the presence of police, the travellers who had provoked the incident calmed down and the coach service was able to continue after a short delay.
No serious injuries were reported and the bus eventually resumed its scheduled route to Mundakayam. Pathanamthitta police said they treated the case as a public-order incident and that prompt action by the driver and crew helped avert a larger confrontation.
Local transport officials praised the decision-making of the driver and conductor, noting that diverting the vehicle to seek police assistance was aimed at protecting passengers and staff. “The driver’s priority was passenger safety and to prevent any escalation,” a depot official said.
Incidents of passenger disputes can disrupt services and cause financial loss for state transport corporations, which may levy penalties for trip disruptions. Police cautioned travellers to maintain decorum on public transport and urged passengers to cooperate with crew members to ensure safe and timely journeys.
The episode underscores the pressures on public transport services, where routine delays or misunderstandings can quickly inflame tensions among travellers. In this instance, decisive action by the driver and a rapid police response ensured the incident was contained with minimal disruption to other passengers.
