Madhya Pradesh Faces Severe Cold and Dense Fog as 13 Districts Placed on Alert

Severe cold and dense fog have settled over large parts of Madhya Pradesh, prompting authorities to issue a cold wave alert for 13 districts. The sudden plunge in night-time temperatures has led to widespread concern for vulnerable populations, disrupted road visibility and forced local administrations to step up precautionary measures.

Madhya Pradesh cold wave: impact and official advisories

Local meteorological offices reported that calm winds and clear skies at night have combined with cold air masses to push minimum temperatures down well below seasonal averages across central India. Dense morning fog has reduced visibility on many highways and rail corridors, increasing the risk of delays and accidents. Municipal authorities in major urban centres such as Indore and Bhopal have reported higher demand for heating and emergency services.

Officials have advised residents to keep the elderly, infants and those with chronic illnesses warm and to avoid prolonged exposure to the cold. Where possible, schools and local community centres are making arrangements to monitor at-risk people and to provide temporary shelter if needed. Road and transport departments have issued guidance for drivers to use low-beam headlights, maintain safe following distances and allow extra travel time.

Health departments have reminded the public of common winter precautions: layer clothing, stay hydrated, avoid sudden temperature changes and seek medical attention for persistent respiratory or circulatory symptoms. Hospitals and clinics in affected districts are preparing for a modest rise in seasonal ailments, including cold-related respiratory conditions.

Transport authorities cautioned that dense fog could affect flight schedules and train timings. While major airports in the region continue operations, passengers have been advised to check with carriers before travelling and to build extra time into their itineraries. Rail services may run at reduced speeds in low-visibility conditions to ensure safety.

Power and civic services departments are coordinating to minimise disruptions. Local administrations have asked residents to report outages promptly and to follow official advisories on safe heating practices, warning against the indoor use of makeshift fuel-burning devices that can pose fire and carbon monoxide risks.

Farmers in colder pockets of the state are being urged to protect sensitive crops and livestock from overnight temperature lows. Agricultural extension teams are sharing guidance on simple measures such as covering seedlings and providing sheltered water sources for animals during the coldest hours.

Authorities stressed that the cold wave alert is temporary and linked to current synoptic conditions. The meteorological department will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as required. Residents are encouraged to follow local news and official channels for the latest information and to heed instructions from emergency services.

Given the scale of the alert, civic agencies across the affected districts remain on heightened readiness to respond to incidents related to cold exposure and low-visibility travel. Citizens can help by checking on neighbours, reporting hazards promptly and avoiding non-essential travel during peak fog hours.

Key Takeaways:

  • Madhya Pradesh is experiencing a sharp drop in temperatures with dense fog affecting visibility and transport.
  • The meteorological department has issued a cold wave alert for 13 districts and advised precautions for vulnerable groups.
  • Major cities including Indore and Bhopal report lower-than-usual temperatures and increased demand for heating and medical services.
  • Authorities warn of travel disruptions; motorists and commuters are urged to take safety measures.
