Malaysia funds RM40 million to resurface nearly 800 roads in Perak

The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has allocated RM40 million to local authorities across Perak to resurface almost 800 residential roads, the minister Nga Kor Ming announced after a working visit to Bandar Baru Medan Ipoh.

Perak road resurfacing to cover nearly 800 residential streets

Nga said the RM40 million includes an earlier RM20 million special allocation to the Ipoh City Council (MBI) for resurfacing 400 roads in Ipoh. The ministry has now added a further RM20 million to extend the programme beyond Ipoh and benefit residents throughout Perak.

“Earlier I announced a special allocation of RM20 million to MBI for road resurfacing in residential areas. Today KPKT adds another RM20 million so the benefit is not only for Ipoh but for the whole of Perak, bringing the total to RM40 million,” he told reporters.

Part of the additional RM20 million will be channelled to the Manjung Municipal Council (MPM), which will receive RM5 million, while Teluk Intan Municipal Council will receive RM3.08 million and Taiping Municipal Council RM3.1 million. The remaining funds will be distributed among district councils and other local authorities across the state.

The minister said work on the resurfacing contracts begins immediately and is expected to be completed ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations. KPKT estimates that resurfacing a single residential road will cost about RM50,000, which means the RM40 million allocation should cover nearly 800 roads.

Present at the announcement were Perak housing and local government chairwoman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching, state environment and green technology chairman Teh Kok Lim, Canning assemblywoman Jenny Choi and Ipoh mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah.

Nga highlighted KPKT’s mandate to maintain roads in residential areas and described the funding as encouraging news for Perak residents. The programme aims to address potholes and deterioration in neighbourhood streets, improving safety and access for motorists and pedestrians.

He also noted a completed resurfacing project in Bandar Baru Medan Ipoh. The works covered around 3.2 kilometres of roads and cost nearly RM1.9 million, a project delivered through cooperation between KPKT and MBI.

Local authorities will oversee implementation, prioritising roads according to condition and resident need. The ministry will monitor progress to ensure contracts meet standards and are finished within the planned timeframe.

Residents and motorists in Perak can expect an immediate improvement in local road quality as crews mobilise under this funding package. The rapid rollout, aimed to conclude before the festive period, should reduce damage to vehicles and lower safety risks on smaller roads that often receive less attention in broader maintenance programmes.

The resurfacing initiative forms part of KPKT’s wider commitment to upgrade municipal infrastructure and support local councils in maintaining essential services. By directing funds to district and municipal councils, the ministry aims to ensure more balanced infrastructure development across the state.

Key Takeaways:

  • KPKT allocates RM40 million to local authorities for Perak road resurfacing, covering almost 800 residential streets.
  • Additional RM20 million extends earlier RM20 million for Ipoh, with specific allocations to Manjung, Teluk Intan and Taiping.
  • Works begin immediately and are expected to finish before Hari Raya Aidilfitri, with average cost about RM50,000 per road.
  • A completed 3.2km resurfacing in Bandar Baru Medan Ipoh cost about RM1.9 million under KPKT and MBI cooperation.
