Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) has expanded its role in workforce development for the sewerage sector through the Asian Sewerage Training, Research & Innovation Centre, known as Astrice. Established from IWK’s technical training centre that began in February 2006, Astrice now functions as a regional hub for practical and theoretical training, capacity building and consultancy support.
Astrice training centre offers practical courses and regional outreach
Astrice provides a blended curriculum that covers core sewerage system management alongside non-technical subjects such as occupational safety and health, customer relations and operations management. The centre trains IWK staff and welcomes participants from industry and overseas, supporting IWK’s ambition to expand Management and Technical Advisory Service (MTSA) offerings.
“Astrice is more than a training facility; it is a capacity-building engine that complements our advisory services,” said Azuan Ahmad Zahdi, Chief Corporate Officer of IWK. The centre supports both internal talent development and the company’s push to be a respected regional consultant in wastewater management.
Technology-led training and knowledge transfer
As the sewerage sector adapts to new treatment methods and automation, Astrice is piloting immersive and data-driven training approaches. Virtual reality modules simulate real-world operational scenarios in a safe, interactive environment, while machine learning and analytics are used to evaluate trainee performance and refine course content.
These innovations aim to shorten learning curves and provide operators with scenario-based experience that mirrors the complexities of modern sewerage systems. The technology focus reinforces the sector’s ability to respond to increasingly sophisticated infrastructure and regulatory demands.
Regional partnerships and certified programmes
Astrice has hosted exchange programmes and mentorships with regional utilities, including Perumda PALD Banjarmasin from Indonesia and Baguio City Environment and Parks Management Office from the Philippines. Such collaborations underpin Astrice’s role as a regional reference centre for sewerage training and consultancy.
All Astrice courses are registered with the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRDCorp) and are eligible under the Skim Bantuan Latihan Khas (SBL-Khas), allowing employers to claim training grants. Interested participants can pre-register through the Astrice website.
Long-term investment in human capital
IWK presents Astrice as a strategic, long-term investment to keep the nation’s sewerage services effective amid technological change. By combining technical instruction with advisory capability and international outreach, the centre aims to produce a workforce able to maintain high operational standards and support regional utilities.
