Security forces in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh discovered a hidden cache and safely neutralised a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) after a targeted search operation on the fringes of Malkangiri district, officials said.
Maoist dump seized in Bijapur and what officers found
CRPF personnel, supported by the District Reserve Guard and local police, were conducting a sweep along the Kandalaparti road when they located a 5-kilogram IED concealed on a foot trail a short distance from the hamlet of Kandalaparti. A bomb disposal squad was called to the scene and technicians successfully defused the device.
Further searches in the immediate area revealed a larger Maoist dump close to where the IED had been placed. Officers recovered 20 detonator cords, batteries for wireless sets and mobile phones, chargers, codex wire, pressure switches, electric wiring, Maoist fatigues and a variety of pamphlets and literature believed to be linked to the insurgent group.
Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Yadav said the discovery disrupted an alleged plan by the insurgents and underlined the importance of vigilance during routine operations. He added that the swift action of combined security units had prevented a potentially deadly attack and that search operations would continue to ensure the safety of local communities.
The recovery has local strategic implications. Residents and traders frequently travel between Malkangiri in neighbouring Odisha and parts of Chhattisgarh, and security officials have previously warned that insurgents sometimes cross state lines to launch attacks and then seek shelter across the border. The seizure of the IED and the associated cache reduces the immediate risk of violence in those transit corridors.
Security sources said the materials recovered could have been used to assemble multiple explosive devices or to sustain communication and movement by insurgent cadres in the area. Detonator cords and pressure switches are commonly employed in command-detonated and pressure-activated bombs, while the presence of wireless equipment and phone batteries indicates preparations for remote coordination.
Local authorities said they would analyse the literature and materials recovered to gather intelligence on the group’s organisational structure and planned operations. Officers also intend to examine serial numbers on electronic components and the provenance of clothing to establish supply routes and possible support networks.
Residents of villages close to Kandalaparti expressed relief after news of the recovery. Community leaders said they welcomed sustained security patrolling and urged civilians to report suspicious movements or abandoned items to the nearest police outpost.
Officials emphasised that operations of this kind are part of a broader effort to maintain law and order in districts affected by Maoist activity. Authorities said coordination between central paramilitary forces and local police remains central to denying insurgents safe havens and protecting civilian life and property.
As searches continue in Bijapur, investigators will pursue leads generated by the seized materials. The operation will be followed by forensic and intelligence work intended to prevent any immediate resurgence of violent activity and to support prosecutions where criminal intent is established.
