Mappls Adds Multimodal Metro, Rail and Bus Routes to Navigation App
MapmyIndia Mappls has expanded its Mappls App to include multimodal public transport routes, enabling users to view metro, rail and bus travel options alongside private vehicle navigation on a single platform. The update, announced in a company press release, is intended to make urban travel simpler and encourage commuters to choose mass transit over private cars.

The new functionality allows commuters to locate stations, stops and interchange points and to plan journeys that combine different modes of transport. Initially available in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, the service is also accessible in Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Jaipur. Mappls rolled out the feature first on iOS and the web, with an Android release slated for the near future.
By blending public transport information with existing navigation tools such as turn-by-turn directions and real-time traffic alerts, the company aims to present a complete picture of urban mobility. Users can now see how walking, buses, metro and rail fit into a single itinerary, helping to reduce transfer times and improve daily commute efficiency.
Rakesh Verma, cofounder of MapmyIndia Mappls, said the enhancement reflected direct user feedback and the company’s ambition to make the app more inclusive and accessible. “The launch of multimodal public transport routes on the Mappls App is a direct outcome of listening to our users. We want the Mappls App to be more inclusive and accessible for every citizen,” he said. Verma added that Mappls plans to widen coverage to more locations to help millions of Indians use public transit more comfortably.
The company highlighted that the update works alongside its existing suite of navigation features, making it easier for commuters to compare travel options and select the most efficient route. By providing schedules and interchange details, Mappls hopes to shift behaviour towards mass transit, easing congestion and lowering pollution in large cities.
Mappls emphasised its focus on building tools tailored to the Indian environment and noted compliance with government guidelines on national borders and sensitive locations. The firm also said its partnerships with government agencies have grown and now account for 20% of total revenue. Continued collaboration with local transport authorities is planned to improve data accuracy and expand coverage.
Transport authorities and urban planners have long sought better information systems to support integrated journeys. Mappls’ approach aligns with broader sustainability goals by making public transport more visible and easier to use. If successful, the feature could encourage modal shift away from private cars and contribute to cleaner, less congested cities.
For now, commuters in the initial rollout cities will be the first to test the multimodal routing experience, while Android users can expect the feature in a forthcoming release. Mappls said it will continue refining the service based on user feedback and data shared by local agencies.
