Mayor Sergey Sobyanin has announced the opening of a new road in the vicinity of Ostafyevo station on the Moscow Central Diameters Line 2 (MCD-2), a move intended to ease congestion and improve connections for suburban residents and local businesses.
The newly completed carriageway features two lanes in each direction and links Yuzhnaya Street with Zalineiny Pereulok. As part of the project, sections of both the street and the lane were upgraded and Yuzhnaya has been extended to meet Varshavskoe Shosse, including a direct exit to the highway.
In total, around three kilometres of new and reconstructed roads were delivered. The scheme was designed with operational and commercial needs in mind: new exits now serve industrial sites, logistics and distribution centres, and several parking areas. City transit will also benefit from a newly built turning ring that enables more efficient route planning and fewer delays for buses and other services.
An emphasis on active travel and pedestrian safety was apparent in the works. The project delivered new pavements and a segregated cycle path along the route, giving pedestrians and cyclists safer, more convenient journeys.
Moscow Ostafyevo road strengthens regional connectivity
Beyond surface works, engineers reconfigured and laid more than ten kilometres of utility networks to support the upgraded area. This preparatory work reduces the likelihood of future disruptive excavations and improves reliability for water, sewage and other services. The adjacent territory has been landscaped to provide a more pleasant environment for residents and commuters.
Officials say the new road will relieve pressure on nearby streets and provide residents of Shcherbinka and the Novo-Syrovo microdistrict in Podolsk with more comfortable access to Ostafyevo station. For commuters using the MCD-2 line, shorter and more predictable surface connections can cut journey times and ease transfers between modes.
Local businesses and logistics operators will benefit from faster access to the highway network and improved on-site circulation. The inclusion of dedicated access ramps and parking areas supports freight and distribution activities while aiming to reduce conflicts with through traffic.
Urban planners emphasise that such projects are not solely about adding carriageway capacity. Combining road building with utility modernisation, pedestrian and cycle infrastructure, and landscaping helps to improve safety, resilience and the urban environment. The upgrade is expected to deliver tangible day-to-day benefits for residents, commuters and companies operating in the area.
Mayor Sobyanin highlighted the scheme’s local importance, noting that the investment will make travel more convenient and help distribute traffic more evenly across the road network. With the opening complete, authorities will monitor traffic patterns and public transport operations to ensure the new links deliver the intended benefits.
