Key Takeaways:

  • MMRC will run Metro-3 (Aqua Line) overnight from 10:30pm on 31 December until 5:55am on 1 January to support New Year crowds.
  • BEST will operate 25 additional buses and extra services on key coastal routes to ease travel to and from celebrations.
  • Overnight services aim to improve safety and convenience for women, families and senior citizens returning from seaside festivities.
  • Commuters are urged to follow metro rules and plan journeys ahead while heritage tour buses will run based on passenger demand.

Mumbai Keeps Transit Running All Night for New Year 2026

Mumbai authorities have announced round-the-clock public transport arrangements to ensure residents can celebrate the New Year safely and return home without undue delay. With municipal elections under way, the city administration, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) have coordinated an extended schedule to cope with heavy passenger flows on the night of 31 December.

Mumbai New Year transport keeps commuters moving

The MMRC said it will operate Metro-3, known as the Aqua Line, continuously from 10:30pm on 31 December until 5:55am on 1 January. The service, which runs between Aarey and Cuffe Parade, will resume its normal timetable from 5:55am onwards. In practical terms, metro services that start on the morning of 31 December will continue uninterrupted through to the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Officials said the move primarily benefits people celebrating along the city’s waterfronts. Travellers leaving New Year gatherings at locations such as the Gateway of India and multiple chowpattys will have a dependable rapid transit option, reducing the need to wait for taxis or three-wheelers at midnight. Authorities emphasised that the extended metro service will enhance safety for women, families and elderly commuters returning from late-night events.

BEST has also prepared special measures for the night. The agency will deploy 25 additional buses targeting crowded seafront destinations including Gateway of India, Juhu Chowpatty, Gorai Khadi and Mahim Chowpatty. Extra runs will operate on routes C-8.6, 203 and 231, as well as air-conditioned corridors A-21, 9-112, 9-116, A-247, A-272 and A-294 between 10:00pm and 12:30am on 31 December.

In addition to the scheduled enhancements, BEST will operate a ‘Heritage Tour’ bus service from 5:30pm on Wednesday until the early hours of Thursday depending on passenger demand. The combined measures seek to reduce congestion, shorten wait times and provide a reliable alternative to private hire vehicles at peak midnight hours.

City officials asked commuters to observe metro rules and follow staff instructions to ensure services remain punctual and secure. Transport authorities will monitor passenger volumes and make operational adjustments as needed.

Organisers framed the service plan as both a practical and precautionary step. By keeping rapid transit and bus options available through the night, authorities aim to lower the risk of overcrowding at pick-up points and make the homeward journey smoother for large numbers of celebrants.

Residents planning to attend open-air celebrations are advised to plan their return journeys in advance, check official service updates and allow extra time for travel during the city’s busiest hours. With these arrangements in place, Mumbai’s transport network is primed to carry large crowds through a safe and orderly New Year transition.
